Does AI have a unit supply cap too?

Maybe I have it the other way around... Large map needs epic speed, or you can't move anywhere in time.

I figured the opposite would be true as well.

It does generally feel best to have game speed scale with map size if you want military to feel balanced. Standard size on epic speed results in warmongers being able to finish the game pretty soon after being able to cross the ocean, but if you enjoy that its fine. If you are going for a non-militaristic game then it doesn't matter much.
 
I find it easier for slower speed even in non-warmongering games. Because you have more time to react and deal with run-away.
