I have a thing I like to do with my units, which is naming them after historical or current units from the civ. This limits somewhat the civs I play regularly, but it does make it more fun. Does anyone else do it?

So as an example, you would name a Celtic swordsman (Gallic Warrior, I believe) after William Wallace?

William Wallace is Scottish isn't he?

I sometimes do, but usualy it is not so much historical.

Something else I do is change city names of old civilizations (Rome, Aztecs, ect.) to match modern cities in similar locations once I reach the modern or industrial age ei. Antium to Venice, Machu Pichu to Lima, Teocholotian to Mexico City, ect.
You can also change the name of your civilization mid-game.

On the occassions I play Rome, I number my Praets as I Legion, II Legion, etc. I've been tempted to have a Lincoln game and rename my units after Civil War regiments. And if anyone remembers Allied General and Panzer General for the PS One, I do something similar to what happened in those games, whereby when my units win tough battles I give them the name of the battle as a battle honor. For example, if I have a unit that's won a tough battle taking Paris, I rename the unit "Paris". If that unit later wins a tough one taking Carthage, he becomes "Paris-Carthage". I also name my ships and give designations to my aircraft units.

My games take considerably longer than TMIT's. :D

I'm usually playing on the world map (34 civs) and if I'm the United States I'll usually name later units based on their duty, US Army, US Border Patrol, Coast Guard, ect. For the navy I like to have named ships for battleships, carriers, subs, ect. I keep some historic ones around for ceremonial purposes later in the game, like the frigate USS Constitution and the ironclad USS Monitor. I also keep around a few squads of musketmen (patriots) in New England and of course my scouts Lewis & Clark. "Most" of my spies are CIA. Some US Seals are dedicated to special squads, Delta Force, Secret Service (for guarding VIPs), and several other sub-squads.

Yes, but no. It's like namig your best Redcoat unit Coldstream Guards, a US parachute regiment the 82nd Airborne, a French infantry unit the Légion Étrangère etc, generally after they get level 4. And as England I name all ships HMS... and air aces after famous pilots.

LOL  ROFL

hmmn, why do you suppose they take longer?

If I play as Rome, I name two of my Praets Titus Pullo and Lucius Vorenus.

I rename units all the time. The BUG (BtS Unaltered Gameplay) Mod has a nifty unit nomenclature feature. It's very customizable. You can specify name conventions for units by city of origin, category and manipulate the patterns using a few different variables.

I often rename units based on their long term "Task Force" assignment and/or promotion line... e.g.: 1-4th Mtn Inf, or 2-12th Guards Inf

I usually just do it when playing as Rome. As the Praets earn their Level 4 promotions, they become "Legio I", "Legio II", and so on.

There's also a way to mod the game so specific types of units draw their names from a list you specify. The folks in the Creation & Customization forum should be able to lend a hand if you want to know how.

I never renamed a unit
