A turn-by-turn replay of a highly successful game, if something like that exists, would be a good guide for people who are new to either Civ in general or a particulat strategy.

I learned to play Civ2 decently by studying some of DaveV's saves, about 20-30 turns apart. At first, I had no idea how he could conquer at Diety level in 700AD (I finished the same game in 1800AD). But it was fairly easy to see how he got from one save to the next. I learned a lot from looking at details, such as what the cities were producing, where the units were posted, etc, which you can't get from a log. Soon I had a good idea of which factors were critical (total production, mobility ...) and then I could imagine even better ways to play. I remain extremely grateful to him for sharing those files.

He also made a few brief comments about his strategical decisions in the game, which were more valuable to me than any standard game log. [In my opinion, most game logs are long, but superficial. It is usually very hard to know what the player was thinking, and what was important].

Unfortunately, we cannot post saves from active GOTMs. But if you want to learn a strong player's style, you could ask them for a few saves from some older GOTM that you are interested in.

Thanks! I found some information there that will be helpful in improving/measuring my game.

Where can I find some of DaveV's old saves? I didn't see them on the GOTM forum. IF they're gone I'll just ask a current player.

DaveV played at Poly, not in CFC's gotms and I'd guess he's hard to find now. If you play for early conquest, you can ask me for saves. For landing or OCC, maybe Ali. For high score, maybe Ace. But there are lots of good players here. You could just find some log you like in a spoiler and ask that player.

Also, if you go to the GOTM Archives web page, you can find the saves that players submitted after their games. You might find only 2-3 saves per game [1AD and 1000AD and the end], but those might still be helpful.

Another option is the sucession games. The logs get less detailed as time goes on, but they do tend to explain the thinking behind major strategetic decisions, and the saves are frequent (provided they are still available). From time to time you can also pick up some tricks you did not know.
