Does anyone find nukes in civ4 at all usefull?

well then - i did not know that your nukes could be destroyed, and always considered the price question- interception usually becomes an issue at some point during nuke based attacks -so here too is something to consider.
All in all tho the idea of subs with nukes under ice sounds good to me- think i'll try that - i at times will set up conditions for the hell of it - like building only subs or building only on mountains ect. So i think i will try a sub only build with this (Partys) tactic in mind.
(And i like paratroopers but even here a tactical nuke is probably within paratroop useability range.

Getting off topic here but I  paratroops as well. They are even much better then they where in their last appearance back in civII because they still have movement points on the same turn as they drop. You can use your bombers to knock back the a cities defenses to O%, damage the units protecting it, drop your troops and take it over all in one turn.
What paratroops are even better for is dropping in very and very quickly cutting off a resource such as oil or uranium form your enemy. Drop in, take out enemy resistance and pillage the improvement all in one turn! What could be better!

I don't like Nukes cause use to many and you upset everyone in the game (all of the AI"s). Plus I've yet to see one AI launch a nuke against another AI.

That's because you alway need a single madman to start a nuclear war..... and the AI is that that stupid!

The first time I used Nukes i was expecting this massive amount of destruction and when I launched the ICBM I was like, "WHA?! THATS IT?!"

Oh they are VERY effective!
Two tactical nuke hits on a city and all units stationed there will be killed and most of the city's buildings destroyed as well as killing off population and rendering the surrounding land unusable.
What more do you want?????

They are useful in right circumstances. Personally I rarely use them against cities (too often shelters will reduce the damage a lot), but they are extremely useful agains enemy stacks. Generally they are of more use against an AI that's superior to me in some aspect (usually VAST numerical superiority), otherwise I don't need them. Typically I nuke enemy stacks before they cross the border and then invade - this way they cannot respond in kind, as they cannot nuke my units in their own territory. On the other hand, nuking cities without instant land assault is usually counterproductive, so I rarely do so, unless trying to cripple a particular city (usually a major production centre).

BTW, all this for Warlords - BTS tactical nukes sound fun, but all of my BTS games so far ended before they came into play. Maybe next time...

a single madman who's technologically advanced enough, that is. let's face it, monty would start throwing nukes around in 2050 BC if he could

Realistically, how can more than half of a city's population survive once you've detonated a NUCLEAR WARHEAD on it? :crazyeye: I can imagine a few people surviving, but half the population?! How can any buildings survive at all? This was obviously done for game balance, but still! Hiroshima was completely flattened in 1945, and the nukes we can build today are far more powerful than Fat Man and Little Boy.

I'm still waiting on the Death Star world wonder (requires the expensive "Galactic Empire" tech) I heard it'll be a pretty good counter to the Alderaanian Civilization

Bored one day and fustrated by losing a war I decided to cheat and just create with the cheat codes several nukes. I launched them on the nearest enemy city and I was surprised by how many nukes the city could take and still have a respectable amount of citizens and buildings in it.

I was very disappointed with the nukes. there is no mushroom cloud anymore. that is the best part of the nuke. And it doesn't destroy all the units in the city. Very disappointing.

I found a very, very good use for a Tactical Nuke in Rhyes Fall of Civ. Fired from Amsterdam into Paris, killing all defenders apart from two fighter units. I was able to walk in with my only 2 movement unit (a tank) and capture it on the same turn that france had declared war on me.

It was such a good moment that a few turns later france fell into civil war and I was left alone. Technologically inferior to France as well, so In my mind, it was a very useful Nuke.

I never really try to get that far in the game cuz the civ games are ancient era focused, not new

No animation? What the heck are you smoking?

To Mondas-it still makes the mushroom clouds, WTH have you been smoking

They shine as preparative artillery in the end-game if you get locked in a modern vs. modern battle to win by score or domination, or a forced Diplomacy win. Just be sure you have a largish stack of them, and an invasion force, before using them so you don't experience retallitation.

:nuke: Does anyone find nukes in civ4 at all usefull because I don't. I find 99% of the time, when I use them on an enemy city they ether get intercepted or explode over the city doing nothing but destroying a few buildings and improvments and leaving some radiation. Plus they are very time consuming to build and starts global warming which is always irritating. Are my feelings shared?

I've yet to really launch any ICBM's or Taticals but do they still cause the loss of respect with other nations like in Civ 3?

I know in Civ 3 if you launch 2 you usually can get everyone (even friends) to declare war on you and by 3 anyone who hasn't declared war will.

Kinda defeats the purpose of nuking someone if it means everyone is gonna dog pile you

That stayed the same, you won't be making any friends if your a nuke user, that's for sure!
