Legally transfer ownership of a weapon?

I bought my friends S&W .357 today (350$ woo!). (I was going to just file off the serial number but he wanted it done legally.)

Probably the same for automobile ownership, pink slips, I don't really know, but there must be some way.

By the way, the .357's a really cool gun. Wish I had one.

In the US that's going to vary state to state and possibly city/county also. Call the information desk for the cops.

Call the local police (NOT using 911 ;)) and ask them what the laws are. Or, drive down to the nearest station and ask the desk sergeant. They'll be able to tell you. Just be sure to phrase it in the future, rather than past tense. (IE, "I want to buy a gun from my friend, and I want to know what forms we have to fill out, etc." Admitting to buying it illegally probably isn't a good idea, even if you intend to set things right)

Unless your state has special laws(make sure to check), it is perfectly legal to sell a used gun to someone who can legally posses one. No paperwork required. You could get in trouble if the buyer can't legally own a gun, or is knowingly buying it for someone who can't own one. AFAIK, those FFL only apply to new guns. Your friend may have to file some registration, so again, check with the local police.
