Does BUG or BAT slow down the game like other MODS?

Hi, I am new to BUG and BAT but have played most of the MEGA MODS for Civ 4. As you know, the problem with the MEGA MODS is that the game gets quite slow towards late to end game (and sometimes would even crash) and I often simply quite at that stage.

My questions: since BUG and BAT don't make many modifications to the gameplay, does your game slow down significantly (or even memory crash) towards the end game? My thinking is that the new interface simply presents the information in a different way and the new unit/terrain graphics simply replaces the old ones so should take the same amount of resources -- is that about right?

Many thanks.

I usually play using BUG as I'm always testing, and I haven't noticed a difference with it. I suspect using the Autologger might slow down the game during heavy war periods as it's writing the battle outcomes to a file. You can, of course, turn this off easily if you aren't posting a turnset log for an SG.

However, it's possible that the extra unit graphics in Varietas Delectat could cause memory problems as it adds a lot of distinct unit graphics for each civ. If this is the case, use BUG instead as it only has the interface enhancements and no new graphics.

You are correct that the interface tweaks in BUG should add a negligible amount of resource requirements to the game. A couple screens have extra tabs, but code is nothing when compared to the memory required for graphics or game data, and BUG doesn't add anything to those.

To get more info about BAT, you could look in the forums for the mods that BAT includes: Varietas Delectat 4.0 and Improved Graphics 2.0 (easily disabled by renaming a single file).

Huge difference between BUG & WoC, the last mod I played. Favor is in BUGs corner on the speed issue, by far.

I use BUG and BAT at the same time; I get no speed problems. Occasionally, I will have a CTD (crash to desktop) with an error saying something about memory allocation, but this is quite rare.

Just to be clear, BAT is "BUG Artistic Tweaks". It's BUG with a bunch of graphics mods added to it. :)

I wasn't sure, so I ran both installers. X_X - So, what does BAT stand for, anyway?

Um . . . :mischief:

Alerum just said in IM that it's actually "BTS Artistic Tweaks", so feel free to believe who you want. ;)

I always post here late at night, so I end up missing little tidbits, like... someone answering the question I'm about to ask. x_x

I can't decide if I should play BAT + Improved AI or Bat + Unofficial Patch. Which would you say makes for a better round of civ?

I believe that Better AI includes the Unofficial Patch, but I can't say for certain. I play with the patch alone since I'm always coding/testing BUG, and I want to make sure any problems I encounter are definitely BUG bugs. For the same reason I don't use BAT.

My setup: BUG + BlueMarble + Unofficial Patch
