Does Gs offer Multiplayer online?

I'm not sure if this has been answered or not, and I cannot quite find any information, or at least that I can understand, in the forums. I usually don't play multiplayer. The last time I did was hotseat with a friend on civ iv. My friend is interested in getting civ vi and wanted to know if we can do multiplayer online. The closest information I could find is play by cloud, which I'm not entirely sure if that counts as playing online. Is play by cloud online multiplayer or not?

If I understand correctly, play by email is basically hot seat that one can play immediately or whenever the player gets the chance to make a turn, like texting or messenger in game format, right? I think some online chess games are like that.
If it's through cloud, how will it inform you when you decide to continue at another time after your turn? Does it inform by email from steam? I hope it does not inform you only when you load up the game itself.

There is online play (both private and public games), lan play, hot seat play and play by cloud.
Also Civ6 has a speed setting especially for multiplayer games, called 'online', which is quite fast and makes games take just one or two hours, I believe.

Only if the map is small enough, and you fully optimize your strategy for your VC of choice. I frequently play Online Speed with Standard and Large maps without optimizing my strategy - it takes about 8 hours to finish the game, faster via Domination.

Don’t forget that Ed and Carl played on Online speed on Tiny map, and the game was still going on after 4-5 hours (though it could have been over earlier, if they hadn’t spotted Eleanor’s victory progress)
