Does Iron only matter for Unique Units now?

Seems like I can get Swordsmen with only copper. Do I not need Iron at all? Only one or the other?

I think Pikemen still need Iron, as do Heavy Footmen.

Iron matters more on the middle ages--knights, heavy foot soldiers and pikemen all need it; they also need forges.
