i dont see anything mentioning a distance from capital penalty , is there one ? . Not sure if its worth travelling 12 squares to build a city with great resources.

If they're too close, they'll comepete for tiles. I haven't had a city large enough that they had to be max distance apart, but just remember that they can use tiles out to three rings, so don't build a city if you know a different one of your cities is big enough to be using those resources.

I was surprised I could do 3 tiles. I thought maybe I could do more, but I had to stop playing and could never tired if I can do 4 or more tiles for city workers.

i wanted to know if there was a penaly for how far cities were apart , like in CIV4 cities suffered from unhappiness the further from the capital .

Does it matter if i build a city 30 tiles from my capital compared to 15?

The AI has no problem building cities across the map from their capital so I assume not, it's just harder to connect them for the trade route. (why are we permanently stuck on the mercentalism civic?)

There's no penalty. But you risk the AI plopping down in between your cities and it makes it harder to defend your cities (not that it's hard to fight the AI in this game). You also pay more for the trade route between the cities (road maintenance) unless you can connect them by a harbor.
