When I am playing and I want to make a trade with an AI player I will open the diplomacy screen and the contact an AI player to see what he has to offer.
I will make test bargains with several AI players to see who has the best deal then go back to the AI with the best deal and complete it.

Well, I was wondering if opening the AI diplomacy screen then closing it down without making a deal will hurt my rep or make them annoyed? Or can I do it as many times as I want?

Thanks

Once I was bored (It was PTW, not C3C, ok? :p ) and I closed and opened the window *a lot* of times and nothing seemed to happen, so I say that it has no affect.

You can test out various trade combinations as often as you like to see what your advisor says will be accepted. As long as you hit only the nevermind key and not the others, there is no effect on your rep that I have ever seen.

Yea, even though he says something like "Stop that!!" or whatever, it has no affect on attitude.

yes, I just got in the habit of hitting escape on them..this is probably the same as saying "nevermind" or whatever

i'm preety sure it is, just like saying "that's it, goodbye" to an AI demand is like saying no

IIRC, exiting out or "nevermind" when you contact him is no effect, but if the AI contacts you, I believe there is a penalty if you do not conclude some type of deal. I usually offer a counter-offer, then change it to a trade of world maps if I don't like the deal he presented, so at least we have some trade.

yes, when they've contacted me with a deal, i feel like i ought to give them something, so if we can't trade maps, i give them 1 gold. Might not have any real effect, but i feel reassured when they say 'what a nice surprise' or 'I accept your gift on behalf of the ------- people.'

There is no penalty for not making a deal. If they make a demand/tribute, then yes there is a small temporary penalty for saying no (if they didn't also declare war, of course).

You can check this in the debug mode, as there are numbers beside the attitude rank that gives an exact value to how they feel towards you and you can test what actions causes this number to change.

If you donate up to 10 gold they will have 1 attitude point relations better towards you, but donations devalue at the rate of 10 gold/turn, so they completely forget about your 10 gold donation the next turn.

Thanks Bamspeedy, maybe I was confusing the tribute demands with their offers. Guess I need to re-read the article! There ought to be a Civ3 Refresher Course with required readings every couple months or so!

That is helpfull, I always chose nevermind if I am unsure and I assumed it was not causing angst from the AI. Whew!

Yeah, I'm glad to have that clarrified, since there's no other way to find out who has what techs (in a perfect world, simply having an embassy in a civ would show you what they have without going into diplo mode, but ah well).

It is also a handy way to check whom they have communications with, how much gold on hand, and a list of cities to compare with yours. Very helpful when you do not have all the map revealed or haven't traded maps in awhile :goodjob:

If I want to take one CIV on and keep another CIV out (or maybe just cannot afford the alliance), I'll give the second CIV 10 gpt. It's rare that the first CIV will be able to afford to talk the second CIV into jumping me. :)

A.I is not that sofisticated to actualy change the reputation depending on how many times you open and close the diplomacy screen.

I'd like to see a single screen with all the known civs you had embassies with on it, that shows each civs attitude towards you and the others. It could be accessed off of the F4 screen.
