Ok, here's my story:

I already know im getting Beyond The Sword for X-mas..
and i was thinking it would be nice to throw a MINI-LANparty, and show my friends what Civ 4 is. now so far iv'e met the computer requirements, 3 computers, all turn on (Exept mine, but I'm Working on it!), and all have a video card BARELY capable of Civ 4 (But Capable nonetheless, I only need 3 players on the "Tiny" map size) I have an Industrial WLAN Setup, cuz my dad works in the industry, and was there for 802.11. other than that i think im good to go......

But I am posting this here because i've never seen Beyond The Sword in action (or at all)
i have Warlords, and i know that you can play regular Civ 4 with just the Warloards Disc in the drive, but my question is, CAN YOU DO THAT WITH BTS TOO??

you see where im going here (And if you don't, your a NooB)
PC 1) Original Civ 4 Disc
PC 2) Warloards
PC 3) Beyond The Sword (?)
= original Civ 4 LAN Game (?)

So what of Beyond The Sword?? Can it still open Reg Civ 4?? or have i been foiled by some sort of Feindish-copyright-thingy???

not sure if my answer is accurate, but this is how it works on my computer without a network:

I have the original Civ4 installed...now with BtS installed, I just need the BtS CD in the drive to allow BtS to work...

Now if you were to install Civ4 on all 3 computers, I'm thinking all you will need is the BtS CD in each of the 3 computers to allow a network game...having the original CD or Warlords CD should be irrelevant to playing a network BtS game once the original is installed on all 3 computers.

I'm not versed on copyright laws, but I'm thinking installing the original Civ4 on 3 computers using the same CD and then running BtS simultaneously on those 3 computers might be a copyright issue??

Thanks, But im not trying to run a BTS Game...
just plain Civ 4, Already installed on all 3 Computers (with EXP Packs, but to do this i would clk the Reg Civ 4 Icon, and with Warloards, it goes to reg Civ 4...)

I don't see this as a copyright issue, (others may) do they really expect you to buy 3 copys, Just to teach noobs....

We do LAN Civ games all the time. Just install BTS on each computer, and patch each one to 3.13 and all that. After you load up BTS just remove the CD and put it in the next computer, rinse and repeat. As soon as the program starts you can remove the disk without a problem.

Generally speaking: yes, they do. Software is usually licenced to allow one installation/copy only. Three installations = 3 licenses required = 3 copies to be bought - if you really want to keep up with the paragraphs of the law.

I know about the one installation per copy thingy. But if I remember correctly, games like Warcraft actually allows you to spawn multiple copy over a LAN. Meaning as long as the one who host the game has the original disk in the drive then the game is on. ;) Not sure about Civ though as I never played a LAN game of Civ before.

Thanks, this is actualy better than i expected. now im not limited to plain old Civ4 on just 3 Computers (Though i think i'll stick with three Comp's on the "Tiny" map size, since im definatly not getting an 8800GTX for X-Mas, my ATI screems at big maps)

So your saying that all 3 Computers could run BTS on just one disk?
Kool

As for doing this with BTS Mods, im not even gonna ask, ive never played a mod (Like this "Afterworld" i've heard so much About...) and i don't intend to teach my friends how to play one.

Thanks...

No problem man, glad I could help! We have tons of fun with LAN games, just did some today. (Unfortunately, none seem to last very long LOL). One CD works just fine if you don't mind swapping around the CD before you start  .

Keep in mind that you need to install all the games IDENTICALLY. That means the SAME patch is downloaded and installed. If you're using Bhuric's unofficial patch, the SAME version must be on all computers AFTER the 3.13 patch is done.

If you're not careful, you'll get OOS errors.

Also if you get problems with sync in game (A big red message across the screen) a easy way to fix that is holding down shift during start up of the game (until the first video plays.)

It doesn't happen often but some few people get it and it's the sure way to fix it. :)

Warcraft and Warcraft II allowed multiple users for one copy of the game via lan games. But honestly I can't think of a more recent game than that that does it. For civ just install... patch... and find your friendly cracked file and play

I have all the Warlords patches in already (Their all official,so far I've had no need for third party ones)
Though i have to wait till i get warlords to patch it. (Obviously)

the idea of throwing around a single disk for a small LAN game is a very good one, it doesn't compromise protection (there's only one disk, if someone steals it, no one plays) and it doesn't make 2K look bad by making you buy multiple copies.

I can see it now-
People throwing the CD to one another around the room...
two games in one, Frisbee and Civ 4...

Jk
