Does the AI get mad when you declare peace?

San Francisco, baby!
I was in a battle with Babylon to the south. They sent a HUGE amount of troops against my poorly defended southern cities. I quickly moved what little infantry I had to them, as well as a ton of artillery.

I also got three other civs to declare war on them. After fighting the Babs to a stalemate (artillery saved me here) we declared peace. The other civs continued fighting, but I noticed they all had a lower view of me. France, which had been gracious was now annoyed. The previously annoyed Russians were furious.

I was wondering if declaring a peace after getting other civs to join a war would cause them to dislike one a little more?

If you have an active alliance with Civ B against civ A and declare peace with Civ A, you are effectively breaking a deal (that with Civ B). So, yes, they have a tendency to get a fair bit upset with you.

I'm not sure whether just waiting 20 turns for the alliance to run its course is enough, or if you have to go in and actively cancel the alliance. I always cancel the alliance, just to be safe.

And remember that during the aliance, the other civs view of you is temporarily improved (maybe from Cautious to Polite). When the 20 turns are up, and the treaty ends, they will probably return to just Cautious like before because you are no longer allies.

How do you cancel an alliance, or any other diplomatic agreement for that matter?

You simply enter diplomatic negotiations with that civilization, as if you were going to start a new deal. Down near the bottom of the screen is a little New that is highlighted. Click on the dull Active next to it. Viola. You can see all your old deals in full glory.

If there's a number next to a deal, it still has that many turns to go before expiring. If there are no numbers, it can be renogiated at any time, simply by clicking on the deal.

Surely this is enough of a FAQ that it should be there, no?

Even if the deal has passed 20 turns, you still have to cancel the alliance before you can declare peace to have a clean record. Also, when AIs and you are at war with a common enemy, your relationship with those AI improves; when you are no longer at war with that common enemy (peace or destoried) the relationship would deteritorate.
