Does the AI know how to sail?

I think people might be failing to consider the AI's plan. If your not playing a conquest game, why invest resources in conquest? What if the AI was gunning for a cultural or science victory? It'd go well for them to just attack and pin down any enemies on their continent. And why invade yours? your assuming that as a tactic, it would do them any good. In a multiplayer game, I wouldn't waste precious gold building a vast navy and invasion force, purely for the sake of it?

I have yet to see a formidable invasion fleet. On my last playthrough as Montezuma, I sent a massive invasion fleet to take out Russia and Babylon. The fleet was escorted by frigates, but it wasn't even necessary as I saw no naval defenses from the AI.

On other playthroughs I've seen caravels and embarked units, but its quite rare. The vast majority of my naval combat is against barbarians.

Civ V AI probably thinks the Earth is flat, so "here be dragons" apply. And since there's no globe view in Civ V, they're most likely right.
