I've played this game for quite a while, and one thing I noticed (other than the fact that I suck) is the AI has never built one fort. Ever. It's weird, I build them all the time. Just wondering if anyone has seen them used signifgantly, or at all for that matter.

forts shouldnt be overused, unless you're going to war with a country and you think you'll need something to fall back on. Then again, if you ever have doubts about going to war, dont. Oh yeah, the AI dosen't use forts. They dont even go to war with eachother withough Human intervention

Regent, I've NEVER seen a fort, but i'll take your word for it.

I've made it to Monarch and also never seen a fort built, nor have I ever built one. I do agree that in Civ II the AI had them all over the place. That's not true that the AI doesn't go to war with each other without human intervention though. I've seen plenty of AI wars that I had no part in. Rarely I even see the AI wipe another civ out, but that doesn't happen too often.

what difficulty level do they do this in? I've gone to Monarch and the AI has never gone to war with each other

They do it on all difficulty levels. True, you can play games in which the AI's are fairly peaceful, but I've played a lot of games in which they fought each other constantly.
One of the most likely causes for the peaceful AI's you seem to encounter is playing with less than the standard number of civs for the map size you use. If the AI's all reach their desired expansion size without "bumping into" each other, they'll tend to be peaceful.

I've seen the AI use forts in choke points, and I was surprised!(positively). But, it doesn't do that often.

Yeah, I always use a huge map with a ton of civs, so that's probably why they go to war. I play at monarch.

Actually, what does a fort look like? I may have seen them if it's what I'm thinking of.

Yeah, I see lots of radar towers too in the later part of the game. The AI always defends them too, even when they could find a much better use for that unit.

By the way, Sarevok, I like your Cao Cao quote. Sounds like the Cao Cao I know from the Romance of the Three Kingdoms games. I'm a Liu Bei man myself.

the quote's in the book too, but as evil as it may sound it makes alot a sense and applies to me alot (mine would be "I would rather betray the world than have the world betray me again)

I have seen radar towers defended by warriors and weak units before, in fact i see it more often than not, lol.

They build them on land bridges from time to time--also, I think when a colony goes inside the border it becomes a fort...

I've seen them build forts and they always use mine, I tend to build them up on mountians in the early part of the game to help defend my empire from barbarian hordes and the occasional early war.

They tend to build a fort on the resource then build a colony

I think that the AI doesn't build lots of forts like it used to do in CivII because forts are less important now, considering ZOC is not the same as it used to be.

I have seen the AI's build forts over resources. Particularly, resources outside their territory.

In regard to the AI's going to war; reviewing the game after a win I have seen evidence of extended AI fighting. Cities captured and recaptured for example. All unknown to me during the game because the fog of war kept me from viewing it.

The AI more or less always accompanies its colonies with forts. Of course, these forts then not infrequently end up inside the AI's borders eventually.

Other forts I see almost never. Then, I rarely build any myself.

I've played with the same game set-up and 3 times in a row history repeated itself, more or less. The Romans were small, Russians, Germans, and Huns were big, Mordor was medium, and everyone kept declaring war on the Romans. Also, something really weird, I made one of the AI's Expantionist Commercial and it waited till 200 A.D. to make its second city. I use forts a lot, only in warlord though, in cheiften I normally never need to retreat. I find them very useful. I gave some units the ability to make them though, and roads. Seems historically acurate.
