I hate to whine, but this was unbelievable. to set up the scenario, i share a northern border with the russians thats about 10 squares across on a standard map. Lined with mountains and hills. So way down south of me in the tundra, russia decides to build a city early in the game...no biggie, there isn't anything there. until i learn refining and see that the only oil square anywhere near me is within the small towns border.

I noticed russia had a lot of cossacks and knights ( 60 or so) from one of their earlier wars. so what I planned to do was make about 5 fortresses in the mountains along the persia/soviet border and put 2 veteran infantry, 1 veteran cavalry, and 1 artillery in each one. Then i was going to wait for motorized transportation, and declare war to nab that oil. Russia demanded medicine from me first, and declared war when i didn't give it to them. I had all of my fortresses filled though so I hoped my guys would keep the attackers at bay. NOT EVEN CLOSE. Their cossacks rolled through my infantry and artillery like they were nothing. the cossacks lost maybe 1 and rarely 2 hitpoints. Even the knights were owning my infantry. This went on for several turns as I sent in reserves who would get cleaned out the following turn. Anytime russia got past my line of fortresses, I was able to kill them off with other cavalry so they didn't get any of my cities. In the end i did get my oil, but only after the russians brought the aztecs into it for about 15 turns.

I think i lost maybe 40 infantry and 50 cavalry to about 15 cossacks and 10 knights.

luckily under war mobilization, i was able to produce about 30 units / turn.

I would like to know the probability of 10 cossacks(6.4.3) killing 40 infantry(6.10.1) who are fortified in fortresses in mountains.

Any ideas?

This seems possibly exaggerated, if you have the saved game at this point before it happened I would have loved to see for myself, the one fortified cavalry and the artillery are useless to defend, so no biggy there, 10 cossacks taking out 40 infantry, well if you just had 2 at each place, then they used 10 cossacks on each 2 then yes, but not if they were all spread out.

hmmmn, would have to see it to make sure you didn't miss some amount of cossacks or huge amount of knights:)

I would like to remind you that it's not because cavalry is supposed to attack that it's useless to defend.
Cavalry : 3 defense. Fortified : +25%, on a mountain +100 %, in a fortress, +50 %. That's +175 % in defense in the worst case, which means 8 in defense at worse. This means that the cavalry in this situation is supposed to have a higher defense rating than the attack rating of the cossack. And twice as much in defense than a knight have in attack.
