Hey guys

First time post, first day with account.

I've just started to play Civ5, and was a huge fan of CivIII. However, with the new game, I'm having trouble finding out the best way to a achieve the fastest domination victory.

I like using America, but haven't found a good tech tree route or policy combination.

Any help?

For tech, just get all the worker techs you need and probably writing, then tech to Iron Working or Horseback Riding and build 3 of your marauder of choice then let fly. As your game evolves, grab construction early for access to catapults. Your army should consist primarily of a frontline screen of tough units followed by siege engines.

For social policies, Honor, Patronage and Rationalism are all winners. You'll have very few policies to choose because of your size so prioritize well. +100% experience, 33% of City state science and +1 Beaker to trading posts will keep your troops experienced and well-armed.

The above advice is good as well for a less cheezy win. Grab worker techs then head towards military techs. Focus on planting production cities (farms and mines/lumbermills) and gold cities (plains/grassland, preferably with a river nearby, and just put trading posts on every tile).

America is a pretty poor civ choice. Easily one of the weakest in the game right now. For fast domination, choose a civ with a good early UU or a warlike UA (Rome, Greece, Aztec, Japan, Siam, Songhai).

Yeah, I'm starting to not like choosing them for the sake of winning. I'm in 2 long games, 1 mp, 1 sp, and im America in both, and in both, im not doing to well.

Next one, It'll be Japanese or something.

Thanks for the advice though, it's really helpful!

I've been trying Rome and France. Expansion and early policies both seem to be pretty effective. Rome is obviously a civ that requires iron to be effective though and I've found iron to be problematic in the standard games.

I've also found that mounted units (require horses) can be even more deadly to an unprepared foe as the swordsman/catapults (require iron).

I would imagine that walls and castles would quickly cause problems for horse units, but I don't think that many people would build those since they're not very effective against siege units, which are more common.
