If you are one of the lucky ones to have not downloaded the new warlords patch, DON'T!!! You won't be able to play the game do to a Direct X 9 error. It will take you 30 min just to down load the correct version - longer if you get the wrong version of DX9 or download DX10.

Idiots!

lol, or like many of us like myself who downloaded and installed the patch in 5 minutes then went back to playing as usual with no problem whatsoever. The fact that you didn't have the most current version of DirectX-9 on your computer is not the fault of Firaxis.

I myself experienced the error as well, but quickly updated my Direct X and the game runs fine.

I think one of the problems is that I have my computer set to 'automaticallly' update DirectX. However, the automatic update doesn't include D3Dx9_32.dll.

This was a pain to figure out, but it was worth it!

If you want to play multi you kinda have to get it.

it was kind of annoying how close i was to reinstalling the entire game from scratch though ..glad i read the forums first to figure out it was just a direct x patch i needed.

Ever since I downloaded this patch the earth 24 map will not work. Anyone else have this problem?

I've downloaded the patch and although it is working, it is at a substantially slower pace. I'm wondering if this is a result of the Warlords patch, or the DirectX update...

You might as well lay off the insults unless you're sure about who you should be aiming them at (yourself). I'm guessing you're running Vista which contains a slightly trimmed version of DirectX. All you need to do is run the DirectX 9.0c installer which should be on the game CD anyway. As mentioned, you were missing one file. All the patch did was utilise that file so obviously it's dependant on it. Again, this is a DirectX problem and has nothing to do with the developers. If you hadn't updated your DirectX it's likely you would have had problems with other games in the future so consider it saved time.

I'm pretty sure these sort of problems were more common when DirectX was first released and progressing through its earlier versions.

I think the patch checks the direx thing now. no problem here

I'm not sure that it runs substantially slower but definitly not the same speed as before the patch. It might also have something to do with my need to reload my computer very badly!

Um, yeah, so I just update the DirectX or follow the link given and it's all good? Still, it's a pain in the ass.

Sorry if I'm not clear. You may have directX 9.0C, if so updating it doesn't help. In that case, you need to install d3dx9_32.

My guess is that if you don't have directx9.0C, there is a good chance that installing it would include d3dx9_32, but don't take it for granted.

Bottom line: Make sure you have directx9.0 C. If you don't, install it. Then, make sure you have d3dx9_32, and if you don't, install it.

I had no issues. There is no problem with the patch although firaxis could have done a better job of advising people that you need a new update to directx. They did with BTS ... just not the patch.

BTW I found my video drivers also needed updating with BTS.

I hadn't updated video for a while ... shame on me.

It's not the game's designers fault if users don't keep their pc's updated.

Read the Readme will solve majority of the problems after the apply and do some research before applying any updates or software.

I counter your assertion that this has nothing to do with the developers with an assertion that it has much to do with the developers.

Regardless of the clear failure in QA about checking for dependencies here (that's why we call them dependencies, so the silly developers remember to check for them, hello?)... but regardless of that: the fact that the readme file does not contain trouble-shooting tips for such an easy and known issue is clear evidence that Firaxis is (culpably) asleep at the switch.

==========

Let me put it another way.... intelligent, prudent persons never rely on anything Microsoft says if they can avoid it... the fact that Firaxis choose to listen to them, why isn't that Firaxis's fault?

- O

PS: In any case, I strongly doubt that Firaxis's mishandling of predictable DirectX issues saved anyone any time, since the next developer to have a dependency might just check for and install that file costing zero time.

redundant post, sorry
