I have a GeForce 6600GT, though I doubt this error is card specific:

I had my AA on by default in the driver (another game I playhas no AA options and needs the desperately). I also ended up with it on in the game, this causes a complete system crash right after it generated the world.

I turned of card and game AA: worked great
Turned game AA back on: Fine.

Gonna try turning game AA off, and card on, see if there is stability problems there.

NV 77.72 drivers.

OK, tested both out

AA on in game, "application chooses" on card: perfectly stable, hours of fun
AA off in game, "forced on" on card: perfectly stable, hours of fun

AA on in game, "forced on" on card: crash-o-matic, minutes of rebooting.

I didn't list my hardware. Bad Me!

Here's what I have
Windows XP Pro
Athlon XP 2500+ tried both normal and OCed to a 380Mhz FSB (~ 3000+ equivolent)
1GB of Corsair "LL" class memory, running at system clocke (it's PC3200, so it's running "underclocked")
Leadtek 6600GT video card
ABit NF7-S V2.0
2x 120GB hard drvies (8MB cache, 7200RPM), one Seagate SATA (system, installs), one Western Digital IDE with an SATA adaptor (swap file, data).

DX 9.0C

This system can take 12 hours of Prime95 and Memtest86 each, with no errors, after which, I've wanted to use my comp, and shut them off. (Both stock and OCed speed). CPU temp never goes above 52C, which for an Athlon, is well within the safety tolerances (not really at risk until you get to about 60C)
