Relevant information might be:

Size of a continent; yours/others/empty ones.
Location of opponents; on your island or not/close to you or not.

Big continents are harder to conquer <u>and hold</u>. I always prefer to attack a small island of someone else, because once I have it, it's completely mine and others will have much trouble getting it (back). At least, this is my experience.

And location should be obvious: if you see a Spanish caravel sailing at your south coast, but you've read the Spanish are above you: you have an advantage; at least, when you're planning to conquer.

Though it might be better just not to read those spoiler topics, don't take it too harsh.

Yeah, guess you're right. But it could be fun to start a 'hearsay' thread that could contain useful information *and* wrong information. It would sort of simulate things like ancient rumours of Atlantis, a supposed west passage to India, or just sailors trading tall tales at port. A user beware kind of thing.
