The other day I fired up my Steam account to play Left for Dead 2 and blast some zombies, when I noticed some downloadable content for Civ 5. Tonight I am going to go home after work and waste away a few hours with a multiplayer game of Civ IV between a friend and I.

Needless to say, I'm not overly impressed with Civ 5, nor is anyone else I know personally who bought it. The best thing we can say is "it was fun and cool at first, but the novelty quickly wore off."

On top of all the downloadable content available for a fee, there is also an expansion in the works. Maybe I'm misinformed or wrong because I'm not keeping tabs on Civ 5 much, but isn't that a little soon? The game probably sold fairly well because the series is famous, but the feedback from the core civ players isn't very positive.

Hate to sound like a socialist and say I feel entitled to more, but they already got my money once, there is NO chance I'm getting the DLC civilizations and I will NOT be buying the expansion pack until you guys playtest it first. Where are you guys sitting on this one?

I dont care about the maps DLC. But any DLC civ will definately be bought. Just so my game has a complete feel about it.

And the price is very reasonable...so I really don't understand it if people would complain about that.

no option for me: love the game, excited about patch, not excited about $7.50 for 2 civs.

well, at least it beats $15 a month or whatever they charge for WOW.

Not sure I have an option for me in the poll either.

I liked the game at first. Got bored with the limited game-play options. I am excited about the new patch. Will test-drive the patch and see if it regenerates my long-term interest in the game before buying any DLCs.

The problem with polls with a lot of options, but all very specific, is they don't really fit anyone. I think it's better to have polls with fewer options, but much more general. Plus the poll seems to be asking two different questions, which makes it even more confusing. Is it about Civ V or is it about the DLC/expansions?

Needless to say, no answer fits me either.

My actual response is too complicated for any of the options, so I voted that Civ V is great:
out of hope for the true potential I see in the game and the features in the latest patch.

I enjoyed the game at first, got really annoyed with the flaws, got the first patch, realized that they actually had the nerve to release an unfinished game, decided I did love the potential of the game, and am now excited and confident this second "patch" will finally get the game to what should have been its initial release stage. Despite my confidence, and the skepticism of others, final judgment of the game should wait until it is "completed" in the next week.

However, there are not enough jeers and criticisms in the world for how 2K/Firaxis handled this botched release.

I expect I will buy the 2 new civs, but not those custom maps. (All I ever end up using are the randomly-generated maps anyhow.)

Balanance-combined, Megamod and Play-with-me are all great mods. Check the links in my sig. I play them more than the standard game nowadays.

This poll isn't biased like some other ones, but still I can't find the right answer for me.

I like Civ5, but I'm not going to buy any DLCs that contain only civs and maps/scenarios. I prefer to play on random maps or fan-made scenarios, and 18 civs is enough for me. However I will buy any expansion packs (regardless of reviews) that add new elements to the core game.

And I don't like Halo ;)

Thanks :) Tried to make the poll unbiased even though I myself am not. As for people who can't find a fit, you can vote on multiple options if that helps, but yeah, there will be options that aren't covered, things I didn't foresee. The "I like Civ 5 but won't be getting the DLC" being the most obvious.

Speaking of things I didn't foresee, there's a much greater positive response than I expected! Now I'm going to have to give it another chance.

I'd be exceptionally happy if thats ALL it took to make the game feel complete (for me at least)

I've been very surprised at the postitive resonse to the (upcoming) patch. obviously the implementation of the listed items will be critical, but if they can pull all of those things off then I think that many people who have been upset will come back and give it a 2nd chance. I admit that I get a bit peeved when people just throw out "ciV sucks!" type comments, but apparently firaxis/2k heard them loud and clear and are working very hard to make it right.

Bad thing for me is that I've become spoiled from playing too many mod-games. cities with 30 hp and walls/castle/mb actually being useful makes it very tough to go back to the standard game with weaker-than-puppy-p*** cities. hopefully the city str modifier will be pretty significant now, maybe they could even scale city HP with era; 20 for classical, 25 medieval, 30 renaissance, etc.

I enjoyed it somewhat at first, and now I do not like it. Unless the expansion has been critically acclaimed by reviewers and people on this forum, I am not going to bother touching it much more.

Frankly, most of the reasons why Civ5 is sub-par have been discussed past death. I (and hopefully many of you) realize now that the game was made as a compromise to both hardcore strategy gamers and casual players.

I don't believe this mixes well. I guess if I had to pick one point about Civ5 that keeps me from coming back day after day, it would be that the game is not hardcore enough. Again, Civ5 is a TBS, and thus it occupies a small niche in the gaming world (let's face it, while there are other TBS games, I am sure there are more players hooked on RTS games). A TBS isn't meant to be casual because the theory of its very design--for the gamer to make every single decision and feel like a god--requires micromanagement. Personally, there is nothing to achieve in Civ5, because all of it has been streamlined to such a degree that the base game involves me pressing end turn and letting my army take over the world. Ah, another thing: the army involves almost 90% of my time just getting it positioned how I want it (well, 90% if you don't count the waiting time in between turns).

My point: The Civilization series was never meant to be a 'casual gamer' series, and it should have fortified the strong fanbase it had (yes, the hardcore fanbase weakened). Plus, adding DLC at times where the game should be fixed is a slap in the face, at least for me.

I'm amazed that the poll so far has a 43% vote for the DLC. Personally I think DLC is a rip off because any modder can do what Fraxis did for free (It just won't be as 'polished').

To hell with DLC... give us the BTS-esque expansion pack!

I'm amazed that the poll so far has a 43% vote for the DLC.

I would like to believe that those 14 voters are (on the most part) anticipating the expansion pack... not DLC. But that's just my guess.

Just out of curiosity, do you have any idea was a socialist is?

Strange poll. Weird how the first two poll options don't include a "liked and still like" or "didn't like and still don't like" option.

As for your question in the OP, keep in mind this map DLC was available as part of various preorders. IMO it's high up there on the lamest DLC for any game for the price they're asking, but at least it's not something they'be been busily working on since release. We can complain about the DLC all we want, but we're never forced to buy it, so the problem is our own.

And the price is very reasonable...so I really don't understand it if people would complain about that.

I think if you look back at previous expansions and browse the list of additions - and then compare the price of a full expansion ($30) to the asked for price here for just two civs and a scenario - it no longer looks reasonable. At all.

I don't hate the game, and I am still playing. But there is an enormous gap between the engaging, high-quality gameplay I was expecting, and what I feel I got. I will not pay any more for this game until that gap has been significantly narrowed.
