And in 1970 you could buy a whole bread for 25 cents.

Thats like saying you can get the crust now for $10. If it costs that much you're at the wrong bakery.

A couple civs is a far far cry from an expansion pack. With the possible exception of Warlords, but there's a reason that was included with BTS :P

We're not talking about prices from 40 years ago. Warlords and BTS are only a couple years old. Suggested retail for boxes has been fairly stable.

Even if you pretend that the original $50 was only paying for the original 18 civs, that's still only $2.75 or so each.

And they want $5 for Babylon? $7.50 for two more?

If you want to argue that the game provides more than 50 dollars worth of entertainment, you'd have a point worth considering. But if you compare dollars for content, the DLC looks like price gouging.
