Downloaded Civ4 - Retail BtS - install problems

So am I totally screwed here or what?

I have a downloaded version of Civ 4 from Gamestop (that took me months to figure out how to patch to 1.74 to play online).

Now today I get a retail version of Beyond the Sword, and when installing its says "failed to patch installation aborted" while it was looking for my 1.74 version.

I called the tech support number in the game after searching for hours online for anysort of help. They were pretty much clueless (surprise surprise).

Anyone please help it is much appreciated, this is absolutely ridiculous!

this is most likely a problem with the way the core game is registered in windows - the digital versions differ quite a bit here - are you familiar with regedit?

are you running windows xp or vista?

Im on windows XP

set a system restore point (under programs -> accessories -> system utilities)
then click on start, click on run, type regedit hit enter
then search (use the search function of the program) for all keys that either have firaxis or civilization in their name and copy the key name - paste those names into a post here

Im not sure if this was what you were looking for, the others that I copied only seemed to copy a file path and not a registry key. These were the only 2 that I saw that when copied and pasted, a key appeared.

Firaxis-

I just used the latest patch keys there - but it should have a key for every patch that has been installed (e.g. 1.00, 1.09, 1.52, 1.61 and/or 1.74 of the core game).

Try installing the patch from gamestop. I had same problem patching up my warlords. I got the civ IV 1.72 patch from where i downloaded the game from then i downloaded my warlords patch from the download section of this site. Hope this helps with bts.

Yeah Ive downloaded the patch from gamestop (trymedia or whatever) to get to 1.74

For some reason now my "copy key name" is greyed out and im unable to copy them

Also when your doing a Find for these should I have all 3 options checked, Keys, Values, Data and be copying everyone that appears as I scroll thru "find next"?

did you find any keys when you searched that matched the stuff I posted?
apart from that I am unsure what to do - the digital distribution is not very well done - and apart from steam and direct2drive sucks outright - and there is not a whole lot known about these distros...

The keys were unable to be copied from my Civilization search, the option to "copy key name" was grey

I followed this instructions from a previous post and got it installed:

I had the same problem installing BtS. I found the patch from trymedia and was able to install it, but BtS didn't recognize that the patch was installed.

But I figured it out. The problem is the patch is put into the registry as 1.74.0000, but the BtS installer is looking for 1.74 only. Add the following keys to the Registry and BtS will install.

\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\1.74

\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization IV\1.74

It's still installing so I'll post back when it's working completely...

So I did that and now it has installed, however it just crashed on startup

Nope standard microsoft program has crashed message came up with the send or dont send option

I am actually having the same problem as he is - I added a 1.74 key in addition to my 1.74.0000 key and the installation worked successfully. Unfortunately, now as soon as the initial loader finishes, BTS launches and then before anything else happens the game crashes.

The error message is just the standard, "BTS needs to close, send an error report?".
