I started a thread a while back about downloading music (I don't do it btw, I just wanted to see what people will say) and there were big debates that took place on whether it was ok (many people supported it, and many don't). I'm pretty sure if I asked whether it's ok to download CivIII everybody would be angered by my question.

So what is it that is different about downloading CivIII and downloading copyrighted music?

Civ3 is a high quality product that deserves the price they ask. The music industry does not deserve the price they are asking, and thus I will take alternative acquiring means, until they are reasonable. If Civ3 was 200 bucks, then I would rip it off too.

agreed.

I really never rip of games, which is kind of odd considering how much music I have. The only times I ever DL a game from the internet, is if it is an old game from childhood, that I just cannot find in stores anymore, and I do not buy stuff off the internet so I can't get it there.

There is no difference. You can say that there's a difference between a $40 game, with two $30 expansion packs, and a $0.99 song from Napster or iTunes, but it's all the same.

The difference is I decide to pay for one and not the other. SOMETHING must exist that is different to make my warped little mind operate in a different matter for the two different items.

I sample music albums by free download, and I buy music I like. Similarly, I samply games by free demo, and I buy the ones I like.

Moderator Action: Because this thread is going to go against site policy in the near future, I regret that it needs to be closed. I believe there was a thread awhile back discussing piracy in general, feel free to start a new one provided there is no actual trading of pirated material. This one is too close to home.
