    Welcome to Dr kossin #36.

Dr is an acronym for Daily Round. Yes, I mean to get in an update every day to the games I will be playing. Of course there might be some days where I can only play a little or not at all, but I will make up for it those other days when I do have extra time on my hands.

Since the 21st edition of this series, the difficulty level has been cranked all the way up to Deity. I'm not at the point where I can win every game thrown at me on Deity level... I probably can't even win every game thrown at me on Immortal but it is getting a bit boring. My goal is now to achieve competitive skills on this level which should hopefully help me improve more.

You, the reader, can help me achieve this goal by pointing out where I got astray, give suggestions on how to proceed, use complex abstract mathematical analysis to argue, curse at me or anything that you may like. Please note that you must respect the Terms of Service of CFC in any case :)

You may shadow this game and post it here if you please, but I kindly request that you put it in spoiler tags and that anyone reading the report abstain from using information found there to help me out.

Should you want more clarification about something I've done, just ask for it and I will try to answer as best as I can.

Enough talk, on to the game.

    The start:

Looks like an interesting start with Ag>AH>???.
Protective Archers might be needed here depending on Barbs/neighbors, but let's hope not :D

Moving the settler NW is an option as that would gain several grassland hills and there might be fewer plains in the BFC this way.

We appear to be on the end of a peninsula with all that water that can be seen on the edges of the fog, therefore the warrior should probably explore eastbound.

Warrior one SW may open up the possible seafood resources at the cost of two settler turns. If you're feeling adventurous, moving the settler SW may take you to coast at the expense of flood plains.

My instinct is to move the warrior NW - try to get an idea of what's in the water on that side before locking out the possibility of a coastal city. Of course, there does appear to be one extra hill to the far west, so maybe that's an empty concern.

Settle 1NW for uber hammer capital? Although that might lose something good in the south and east fog, I'd still be tempted to settle there, food will be enough with FPs.

Am I really the only one who thinks SIP with riverside green pig, 3F Calendar resource, AND flood plains is the way to go?

Financial huge river capital sounds pretty spiffy to me. Really don't like how much water you're surrounded with though. You may find yourself on the wrong end of a choke with somebody awful like Napo or SB blocking you in.

No, I'm with you, but I'm watching the discussion with interest. My main concern with SIP is that there might be coast 2SW, so I'd move the warrior 1SW to check that before making a final decision.

As opposed to moving to a location with riverside green pig, 3F Calendar resource, AND flood plains?

No, you probably (edit: missed drlake ahead of me. try "certainly") aren't the only one thinking that. But you probably should be thinking bigger. The game you will get from the current location is clearly different from that you'd achieve with the NW move. The start selector is pretty generic, and certainly not tuned to kossin's preferred style of play.

Which is not to suggest SIP is objectively wrong. Only that the decision calls for more thought (and likely more data, since it's pretty cheap to obtain at this point).

I'd SIP. Pig + Calender Resources + High Potential for Horse + 3 FPs and 3 Hills is always fun, especially with financial and a whole bunch of riverside tiles. SIP.

I'm not an expert, but I was taught to settle in place unless if you see a good reason not to. To me, I don't see enough of a reason to move. You know it'll happen that you move, and you have like 2 wet corns south or east of you that you move away from.

^^ The fog east shows forests and plains iIrc, definitely not pigs.

Not that I'm not considering SIP but I like to consider the idea.

I'll give it a try, but I won't do a write up on it as I'm still in the middle of 2, but I'll report whether I win/lose.. I'll most likely be SIP.

    Make way for the noob.

Trying to understand the pros/cons. I'm assuming SIP means Settle in Place? If so, that's be my inclination. Can you briefly explain why coast to the southwest would be favorable/unfavorable? I'm assuming the spot at the mouth of the river is favorable especially if you have something like clams? To this point, I've noticed coastal cities away from river deltas seem to stagnate easier because of half the tiles being unimprovable (apart from lighthouses?).

Sorry, again, I'm new and trying to get up to speed on game mechanics/strats.

Edit: btw, this is awesome! I need to go check out the other 35. Thanks so much for posting this. It's small stuff like this that helps tremendously. Seeing players thought-processes.

    Game over for me!

    Spoiler :

The land we're given simply can't compete with Sury's or Julius'. I looked at the WB after I lost (well, I assumed I'd lose with Julius' Praets at my door) and Sury and Julius had beautiful land... all green, nice calender resources, some gold, lots of food... while this whol while we're stuck with a giant desert, 3 land-food resources and a bunch of other food resources we need boats to reach (which all the fish/clams were placed in pretty crappy spots). On the up side we did have both Marble and Stone... Keep in mind that when Julius DOW'd me, he had already DOW'd Sury earlier in the game! This game is *potentially* winnable, but you'd need a lot of luck and a lot of skill. Was just about to place my last (7th?) city too :(

So you'll drop a second city there. No biggie. The good tiles don't go away just because you choose to move.

The dice are loaded in favor of the AI choosing the right place on the map for your initial city. But the AI is still AI, which is to say that the AI is still dumber than a rock.

Put a different way, the map generator evaluates the quality of the land the same way whether you are playing Settler or Deity. It's got absolutely no sense that at some levels you have the luxury of milking a long term advantage, while at others you MUST pursue the short term advantages to avoid being overrun.

Nor does it have any sense for the style of play that you, as the human, prefer.

At least you went down in flames Kadazzle.

I don't want to give away too much but the map seems winable, albeit definitely no cakewalk.

    Spoiler :

Julius just declared on sury. I've scouted out most of their lands. For the cap I went 1 NW. Have 3 other cities totalling 5, space for 1 more. Didn't manage to grab taoism or Glib.

Comparing our own land to others, it does look very difficult. Given there are no religions on this island, I think my only chance is rifle or cannon war. Probably cannon since collat will matter so much in this... For diplo I'll probably declare when julius asks me, at the moment he is pleased.

    Any thoughts or ideas?

On a side note, what do I do when my attachments limit is reached? :p. It isn't close, but thought I'd ask.
