I had this extremely disturbing dream this morning. Actually I'm not sure if it was a dream or a hallucination. It was insane.

So I supposedly woke up this morning like I was awake, I knew it wasn't a dream, I think....anyway I opened my eyes I was in my bed looking up and the first thing I saw was this dark figure standing above my bed.

Bloody creepy, some figure cloaked in darkness and shadows standing over my bed. And then he started approaching me slowly like leaning in towards me.

So of course I tried to defend myself I tried to put up my arms and push him away. But I couldn't move my arms, my legs, I couldn't even close my eyes, I was like completely paralyzed or something. So this dark figure leaned in closer and closer I saw his eye, just one, I couldn't see the other and finally I snapped out of it, I was able to move again and the figure disappeared.

So what the hell was this? Did I have a bloody psychotic episode or something? Should I check myself into a mental hospital or something? This is really disturbing me....

No. Probably it was a dream. Certainly not grounds to "check yourself into a mental hospital", they wouldn't take you in for that anyway.

It was Sleep Paralysis. Basically your bodys asleep, but a part of your brain is awake. Unfortunately another part is still generating dreams.

I have sleep paralysis too sometimes, but fortunately I'm unimaginative(?) enough not to have my dreams intrude into my room.

But I was awake, my eyes were open, I was lying in my bed and hallucinating or something (and I wasn't on any acid), plus I was paralyzed temporarily I couldn't move.

Ah so thats it.....good to know I'm not insane, and not the only one...whew....

Ah now I understand fully

However, various studies suggest that many or most people will experience sleep paralysis at least once or twice in their lives.

# Sleeping in a supine position (facing upwards)
# Irregular sleeping schedules; naps, sleeping in, sleep deprivation
# Increased stress
# Sudden environmental/lifestyle changes
#A lucid dream that immediately precedes the episode

I had all of those.... and this is my first time experiencing this. Well I hope it never happens again, this is something I can do without.

i thought this was going to be about precognitions, and de javu

Now those are creepy. You dream of something, that just seems strangely real, but nothing extraordinary (most recent one I had was driving past a certain store, seeing the surrounding cars). And just the other day, I was driving past that store, and it was almost like a flashback. Every detail exact, including the color of the cars, and my exact movements, and the placement in contrast to the store.

But it's never the same deja vu thing. 10 times out of 10 I don't even see it coming and then "holy sh**!! I've seen this before."

The part that is very unnerving is the level of detail that corresponds to each instance (dream and in reality), especially dealing with things you have absolutely no control over.

I once had a dream where I dreamt quite convincintly that I had woken up.

In my "woken" state, I realised that I was still dreaming. I then tried to really wake up, from my dream in which I had "woken up."

It was quite weird, knowing that you're dreaming, but not being able to wake up.

It sounds like you're describing some sort of enlightenment!

Sometimes I dream that I'm smoking a cigarette. Its so real I can taste, smell and feel the smoke in my lungs. Those are my nightmares now.

The best dream I've ever had was when I knew I was dreaming, and I was able to influence the course of the dream. I still couldn't control it like "now I wanna dream about being on a tropical island with 12 naked supermodels", but I was able to skip the parts of it I didn't like and focus on the pleasant parts.

I think it's called lucid dreaming and it can be practiced, though I haven't tried that much. Usually, I wake up the moment I realize I am only dreaming.

I have nightmares that I go back to jail. Even if I don't remember I can identify when I have those dreams because my body is covered in sweat, my heart is pounding, and I have to make sure I'm at home.

This morning a police siren wailed by and I almost had a heart attack when I woke up!

I have that all the time. :D I don't know how I do it, probably because I was terrified by horrible nightmares for a year or so, until I somehow learned to control my dreams. But for me, in 99.9% of the nights I can't remember anything about any dream, and I don't feel anything (warmth, cold, hunger, thirst) - literally I feel that there's a big blank space between the moment when I fell asleep and the moment I woke up.

It's great to have this. I can control them to a great degree, but if I exaggerate I wake up. :)

To the threadstarter:

Never had something like that myself but have seen it before on a documentary as the rational explanation for some "alien abductions". They said it can be a very, very scary event, and it has been known for a long time because they found the same symptoms in ancient documents.

Anyway, if I ever have it, I'd take your cloaked figure over an alien anytime.
