Epic fail for GoW.

Users on the Gears of War official forums are reporting that the digital certificates for the game have expired, as of 28th January 2009. This means that the game will not launch at a system date post-28th Jan. Obviously, this is awful news for those people who enjoy playing the game on the PC, since unless they keep their system date before the 28th, they cannot play the game.

Lots of games have an auto-update feature in the auto-launch or game windows, although I've found them to not work very well and prefer to just download it myself (it's usually faster and I know the size of it then). Steam is the exception since as VALVe does not provide seperate download patches for their games afaik.

EDIT: Also the problem according to EPIC is NOT the DRM, but that they made a mistake when they signed the certificate which is why it expired.

Although this raises the question how long to other games' certificates last? Will I be able to play say Crysis in 5 years?
