[DRN-001] BtS Any Which Way You Can

lurker's comment:
I've been following this CG and it's been real interesting and fun so far. :goodjob:

You might be interested to know that you can dictate what you want your vassals to research by telling them "Let's discuss something else" and then "We would like you to research..." It's not a very obvious feature and I haven't seen anyone mentioning using it in this CG.

Thanks Pixelz and all our lurker fans out there!

Turn 0: (Turn 389) Someone didn't finish their turnset completely. Will play until turn 405 to even it out.
Traded Roosevelt Horses for Ivory. Figured he could use horses. We can cancel when Industrialization comes in.
Hammurabi is trades his only incense for one of our extra silk.
Recalled a galleon of Native America coast.
MM'd Buffalo so it would grow faster.
MM'd Philadelphia to run more specialists and no water tiles

Turn 1: Ironworks done in Boston, start Ship of the Line for more navy.
Library done in Akkad, start Granary.
See Galleon off the coast in Russia with a spy in it. See a sign on a Russian town that says Blow This Up. Put 2 and 2 together.

Notice Catherine has quite a buildup off our coast.

Turn 2: :coffee:

Turn 3: Medicine in. Research Combustion.
Change civics to Universal Suffrage and Free Market for 3 turns of anarchy.

Turn 4: Hammurabi demands Scientific Method. Since he's our vassal I give it to him. Let me know if this wasn't a good idea (he can't trade it right?)

Turn 5: Spy completes her mission and returns to Washington. The sign Blow This Up now points to an unimproved grassland tile.

Spy boat is there to take her back

Turn 6: Sid's Sushi Co is founded in Babylon. Start Executive there, will spread it to Miama (production, and is -1 food deficit)

Turn 7: Get 2 clam and fish from Roosevelt for corn and sugar. Sid needs rice and seafood!

Turn 8: The guy I'm playing as on my other SG makes an appearance. I wonder if he's going to be as big a jerk as we'll be playing him. He's Zara's vassal. Not sure where he is.

mdr-gandhi0000.jpg

St. Louis (coal city) steals a tile from Russian Empire. Free workshop!

Turn 9: Kremlin completed in Washington.

Turn 10: :coffee:

Turn 11: Combustion in. Research Electricity.

Turn 12: One of our spies caught trying to sabotage Catherine town. Bad luck, had 77% chance of success.

Turn 14: Gandhi wants us to end trade with Catherine. I told him that a true pacifist finds ways to work around their misunderstandings.
Notice Washington needs a granary. That must've gotten sabotaged or something, we couldn't have not had one for this long.

Catherine's making me nervous with 2 galleons off our coast. I send a ship of the line and galleon as escort.

Turn 15: Still tracking Catherine. Wall Street cued up in Babylon. Notice the fish off the coast of Seattle that need a workboat. Cue one up and put a sign on the spot.

Catherine's navy off our coast, there's 3 ships (2 ours and 1 hers) on 1 tile.

Demographics: #1 in GNP, production, land area and population.
We're at 37gpt surplus at 80% research.
#3 in troops and a distant 3rd at that:

mdr-power_17880000.jpg

I think we need more troops and warships. More boats on our east coast for sure. Our production cities are unhealthy but we can live with that.

Would coal plants in our production cities make sense? We could do hospitals and aqueducts to offset the unhealth. Though they're already pretty unhealthy.

Where do you think Sid's Sushi should go next? Buffalo might be a good option.

Babylonia! To prevent our economy from crashing, you have to spread it at about 1:2 ratio to home and abroad. We have two vassals who will gladly spread it to their own cities once we give them the initial seed. That should be enough to pay for for a branch in any of our own cities not yet close to the happy cap.

By the way, you can extort more delicious seafood from our dear vassals.

Where do you think Sid's Sushi should go next? Buffalo might be a good option.

Zara and Sitting Bull would be nice targets, and Catherine even better if we could get her to change from Mercantilism. We need some foreign branches to offset the domestic cost.

09:28 AM > Got it.

10:48 AM > FINISHED !

ANALYSIS

T.405 (1790 AD - njorls's last turn) :

He left us 610 gold (+37) at a 80% research-rate (RR)
He left us Electricity research (1 turn)
Catherine's attitude towards us is "cautious"

T.406 (1792 AD - My 1st turn) :

1.1 > Electricity finished. Industrialisation next (pre-selected : I do not change it).
1.2 > Infantry finished in Boston. I select Aqueduct.
1.3 > Observatory finished in Boston. I select Aqueduct.
1.4 > Lighthouse finished in Akkad. I select Barracks.

T.407 (1794 AD - T2) : Grocer finished in NY. I select Destroyer.

8.4 > Revolt in Babylon reduced to 1 fist.

T.414 (1808 AD - T9) :

9.1 > Pub. Trans. finished in Boston. I select Destroyer.
9.2 > Aqueduct finished in Miami. I select Hospital.
9.3 > Order restored in Babylon ! 28 :) > 25 :( ... but it is starving.
9.4 > In Babylon, I put Wall Street (18 turns) on the backburner and select :ar15: (5 turns).

T.415 (1810 AD - T10) : Barracks finished in Atlanta. I select Destroyer.

T.416 (1812 AD - T11) :

11.1 > Our Privateer is attacked by the Native-American player : she is sunk after destroying 2 ships.
11.2 > Hospital finished in Philadelphia. I select Pub. Trans. (city is very :yuck:).
11.3 > Revolt has restarted in Babylon ! 5 .

T.417 (1814 AD - T12) :

12.1 > Barracks finished in Chicago. I select Destroyer.
12.2 > Destroyer finished in Babylon. I select Destroyer.
12.3 > Destroyer finished in Seattle. I select Barracks (only 2 turns).
12.4 > Revolt in Babylon reduced to 4 fists.

T.418 (1816 AD - T13) :

13.1 > Message : Silver discovered near Washington.
13.2 > Revolt in Babylon reduced to 3 fists.

T.419 (1818 AD - T14) :

14.1 > Hospital finished in Washington. I select Destroyer.
14.2 > Barracks finished in Seattle. I select Destroyer.
14.3 > :ar15: finished in Akkad. I select Airship (only 5 turns).

15.1 > Destroyer finished in Boston. I select Destroyer.
15.2 > Pub. Trans. finished in Philadelphia. I select Bank (only 2 turns).
15.3 > Barracks finished in Buffalo. I select Airship (relatively quick).
15.4 > Great Scientist born in Chicago. I leave her to pigswill 's care.
15.5 > Revolt in Babylon reduced to 1 fist ... but Babylon will remain a problem (probably due to secret, foreign :ninja: operations).

CONCLUSION

1. I have tried to reduce :yuck: in a few polluted cities.
2. I have built a lot of Barracks + Destroyers to satisfy you warmonger guys.
3. I have concentrated a fleet of 6 Destroyers + 4 Galleons (more Destroyers are being produced).
4. njorls left me 610 gold at a 80% RR. I leave 4626 :gold: at a 70% RR.
5. My 15th turn is the last turn for the research item. pigswill shall be able to select a new research on his very first turn.
6. I have not touched anything having to do with :espionage: operations.
7. I have received no message from Catherine : she has remained "cautious" and has not done anything threatening.

Got it. Had a look. Catherine's power is based on rifles, knights and even elephants. No problem. Maybe build a few tanks as a reaction force though Cat is a long way behind on naval technology. Transports have twice the strength of ships of the line.
Probably go for radio and race Cat for Cristo Redontor.
Health is certainly a major problem.
I suspect that Baylon's problems have something to do with nasty spies, maybe even a Great Spy (boo, hiss). Knock up a spy and a security bureau.

We are in UniSuff with 4626 :gold: in pocket? Rush buy, dear team, rush buy!

Our health situation is pretty dire. Going full industrial will shrink our cities heavily. I noticed this recently in a SP game wher my Ironworks city accidentally shrunk to size 1 (without poison water). Maybe we can counter it with the Sushi, but we need WALL STREET up and running! Just rush buy it.

We still haven't gifted all techs to our vassals, it does no harm, they cannot trade them. No tech brokering is ON. I hate seeing vassals researching Education or something silly like that. That's why I also like to swamp them with corps so they won't have excess money to waste on silly things like redundant research or harmful espionage against us.

Yeah, it sounds like spy activity in Babylon. I put Wall Street there because it's our highest money making city by far thanks to its shrine. You can always build troops in our production cities and ferry them across.

Could you post your reports as new posts and not edits Sorceresss? It showed the post marked as read with no new posts. I didn't know you'd posted until Pigswill posted.

njorls : "Could you post your reports as new posts and not edits Sorceresss?"

Answer > OK. I was not aware of the possible problem my procedure could create : easy to do as you demand, next time.

pigswill : "Transports have twice the strength of ships of the line."

Answer > I forgot that. We could then upgrade the Galleons, in the massed fleet, to Transports -- we have the :gold:. [done by pigswill : see next post]

azaris : "but we need WALL STREET up and running! Just rush buy it."

Answer > Oh, really !?! I put it on the backburner (see my turn 9.4) in Babylon because with all that unrest, it seemed it would take too long to produce there, and because I wanted to bolster the city's defense (considering its vulnerable location). Rush buy ?! [done by pigswill : see next post]

Another 15 turns played.

Another save: http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/90414/MDR_AD-1845.CivBeyondSwordSave

Upgraded galleons to transports. Deleted unpromoted longbows; upgraded promoted units to infantry. Finished destroyer builds and dispersed them to both coasts.
LA has an academy.
Babylon has couple of spies, an imported garrison and (rush bought) Wall Street.
We don't have aluminium but Roosevelt has a couple: got one in tribute.
Hammurabi and Roosevelt have most of our techs.
Techwise went Radio>Mass Media.
Boston and Washington have drydocks to speed up warship production.
Miami is building Eiffel Tower.
Philadelphia is building Rockn'Roll.
Sushi has spread to Babylonia (Nippur); another exec being built to spread Sushi to Sitting Bull or Roosevelt.
Zara now has two colonies: Gandhi and Victoria.
Various buildings have been built in various cities, nothing exciting though.
Spent loads of money to cashrush Cristo redentor in Boston:

We're fairly skint, not caught up much on power, economy is ok, no more nasty sabotages.

I'm thinking about going for UN not so much for diplo victory but to try to force through stuff like universal free markets to spread the benefits of Sushi to all and sundry.

Had to look up what 'skint' means :)

So with aluminum in tribute, space race looks like our victory condition. Fine with me. It could be interesting if Catherine starts using her troops. Cristo Redentor and our tech superiority should keep us safe.

The UN sounds good for Free Markets resolution.

Babylon looks unhappy due to wanting to join their distant homeland. Ummm, your distant homeland is 3 tiles away. But Eiffel Tower and Rock & Roll should fix that.

Looks like the worst of our health problems are behind us as well.

Spent loads of money to cashrush Cristo redentor in Boston:

For those who don't know, that means we can draft and whip every turn without ever actually converting away from UniSuff and Emancipation. Switch civics, do the deed, switch back on the same turn. I recommend we use this possibility heavily. For example, right now we should whip the unhappy citizens in Babylon into something productive.

I'm thinking about going for UN not so much for diplo victory but to try to force through stuff like universal free markets to spread the benefits of Sushi to all and sundry.

You can only enfore Environmentalism through the UN - that means our own cities will end up costing 2/3 more.

Nothing exciting happened, so there are no pictures this time.

Turn 437: Mass Production researched. I research to Rocketry by Flight instead of Artillery to give us bombers. Started building the UN in Boston
Turn 438: Rushed a Security Bureau in Babylon to stop spying and revolts.
Turn 440: The plan didn't work. Babylon is out of action for 6 turns.
Turn 441: Caught a spy near Babylon. From Catherine or Hammurabi?
Turn 442: Brennus asks us to stop trading with Gandhi. Brennus is more scary (and important) than Gandhi, so I agree.
Turn 443: Catherine demands Mass Production. In your face!
Turn 444: Sid's Sushi spreads to Chahokia (Sitting Bull)
Turn 445: Rushed National Park in Buffalo, and discover that we also need to build libraries etc. to be able to assign our free specialists to something useful. Queuing up libraries and markets.
Turn 446: Earthquake in Washington costs us 42 gold (pocket change) in relief efforts.
Turn 448: Sending a transport with a Sid's sushi manager off to Roosevelt. Rock and Roll is finished. Building an airfield for veteran bombers and fighters
Turn 450: Research set to Plastics (no beakers invested yet). Got a new Sid's sushi manager in Babylon, but I didn't decide where to send him. In the next turn we will get the UN and the Eiffel tower. I suggest military instead of wonders for a few turns.

Trouble is still brewing in Babylon. Are we risking a permanent flip back to Hammurabi? I sent a great artist to Babylon to give us an option of ending the next revolt quickly, but I suppose a great work wouldn't make any difference in the homeland unhappiness, or spying activities.
