Long games are fun too, but duel games are nice. You get to sit down and bang a game out really fast. My recent dual domination win ended in 500 AD after an hour's play or so. It was pleasant and has made me realize that it's definitely time to upgrade to a more difficult AI setting (I had been playing on Prince).
One of my favorite parts of Civ is the beginning. You're looking for all the best locations, trying to get your settlers there first. I like CiV, don't get me wrong, but that part is a smaller portion of the whole game. In a fast game, though, you're basically finished once that phase is over. It's a sweet kind of thing.
