So you have to take everyone's capital, yes?

But once you take a capital, they switch it to a remaining city.

Any way you can see that info without writing it down or remembering? Those Aztec cities all sound the same to me.

And I would imagine you have to beat them down pretty hard. Maybe leave them with one city, otherwise they'll build up an army and be a pain in the butt when you're trying to take someone elses capital.

I was thinking of shooting for my first cultural win, but that's not going to happen. So, I'll try to take all the capitals.

If you go to the "victory progress" screen, it will show you which civs still have their capital - that should solve your problem.

If I'm understanding you correctly then I think the answer you are looking for is:

For some insane reason, you don't have to control all capitals, you just have to be the last civ in control of your original capital. The new capitals aren't important. All that matters is each civ losing it's original capital.

Knocking a civ down to just a couple of cities will usually make them irrelevant. You'll need to have a few defensive units to make sure they don't act up but your main force can go after someone else.

You don't need to own everybody's elses capital.

If for some insane reason two AIs each captured the other's capital you don't need to DOW either of them to win.
(In theory you could actually win a domination game without taking anyones capital. Ally a city state that's next to the target's capitol; DOW the target, now gift your city state a lot of units.)

All that's important is that your the only one left with your own capital. It's also why runaway AI on the other landmass is less of a problem than you might think. They've already done your work for you by knocking out every other AIs capital on that landmass. You just need to set up a surgical strike to take their capital out.

Even on Pangaea this is a viable strat. Say you have a lot of difficult terrain and CSes between you and the lone remaining runaway. Say this runaway has his capital along a coastline, and that he is quite dependent on his city-state allies. Say you have a goldstack in the 10,000+ range.
