Dumbest Move Ever

I let Monty live to long in one game and didn't check his power score. I thought that I was so technically advanced to him, what could possibly happen if I attack. So I bring my stack of 20 inf/15 canons only to see it obliterated by 50 cavalry or so. In the following few turns I lost about 4 cities. Hate monty since that day.

Heh. I did something much like that. Mine was intercontinental, and my mistake was not thinking that the war he had going on elsewhere on his continent was why I didn't see the gigantic stack of mounted units in the Aztec cities before I invaded. I remember very clearly thinking, "Wait. What happened to my rifles and cannons?"

My stupid errors are numerous. Where to start?

* Building the AP when i just have one city with the AP religion, then losing via the AP shortly thereafter.

* Forgetting to fogbust, resulting in a stream of pillaging barbarians.

* Getting so enamored of my wonders, only to have my warrior-defended cities fall to barb archers. Talk about embarrassing.

* Building an incredible bronze age stack of doom, conquering all, crashing my economy, then losing my entire well-promoted units to Strike, then getting conquered by my other neighbor.

I could go on ...

Thinking that Monty would not attack his brother in faith (me) instead of the AI infidels. He blew through 3 of my warrior/archer defended cities with his stack of jags and cats before I gave up.

Don't assume sharing religion will keep you safe from attack.

Actually shared religion will keep most wars at bay. But that's Monty for us. :) Watch out for Alex too.

Hmm... I used to always switch to State Property because it let me run a high research rate. Which apparently could be an illusion. Now, not so much...

It really helps that they added that (+???) visual next to the percentage of research so I can compare different civic setups.
