Duty promotion for Army Commander

I don't know what this promotion exactly do for my units and how exactly does it work. I'd be grateful if someone would explain it to me :D
 
Duty is "Gain the Heroic Assault Ability. Deal direct damage to a unit in the command radius that has the same domain as the commander." and I hate to say it's the one thing on Commanders I haven't used yet. May the God's of War forgive me.

I'm playing a semi-warmongwring game now so I will try it on my next Commendationed Commander.

I would assume it's just like an attack with any other unit. It might be on a 5 turn cooldown like the one that allows your commander to give a unit an extra attack
 
I tried this once and never picked it again. It does mediocre damage and can't be used every turn.

I guess the intention is to use this as free damage that can swing a tight situation, but mostly it pales in comparison to other commendations.
 
I've now tried it but I'm getting something wrong or it's bugged. It does have a 5 turn cooldown.

I have not been able to use it on (or rather, I used the button but the action appeared to have failed);
Enemy Commanders
Units inside Ancient Walls
Units inside City Center after walls were broken down
Nagarika (Unique Settler)
Infantry in the open field

I tried once on a Phalanx in the field. It failed to do anything but it was my first try so maybe I did something wrong.

I got a new button on my Commander Interface that looks like a sword with some stars around it. I click that and all buttons except the new one dissappear and I lose all my movement. Maybe it did some damage but I didn't notice it.

I've tested it in every scenario I can think of at this point on an Army Commander. I might try it on a Navy Commander later but from what I can tell so far it does nothing.


Here I am trying to use it on a Courser in the open battlefield and it does nothing but remove all 4 of my Commanders movement. Maybe it is an issue with Unique Commandes as I've played Persia/Mongolia and they both have one.

Edit: I play on PS5 so I am not sure if it works on other platforms.

I did eventually get it to work in the Exploration Age. It seems to be similar to the bug that affects Assault in that it will/will not work until after the next age transition.

It only did thirty damage. I think i would rather use the Second Wind ability. Commanders tend to lose all movement when entering Zone of Control and Heroic Assault requires movement so you have to wait an entire turn to use it. Instead you can stay back 1 tile and use Second Wind much easier.
 
The best use case for it is probably when defending a district in a dicey situation. But there's really no reason not to take other commendations like Second Wind that are just much more flexible or has more use cases.

This promotion seems familiar. I think you get it when you finish all the assaults. I also found it kind of average, I wont say weak but maybe it was like that so it wont be so OP.

Two things- you don't need to finish a tree to get a commendation, just get to the bottom of it. And your can pick any of the five, you don't have to get the one directly below the tree that gave it to you.
 
That could be right, yes. Thank you for the clarification.

What does that mean?

You said the commendation ability this thread is about is the one you get when you complete the assault tree. I was saying you don't get any certain commendation for completing a certain tree. For instance no matter which tree you get to the bottom of you can select any of the five commendations.

Hey, sorry for the late reply! I appreciate that you went through effort to actually see what does this promotion do! I think I understand it now better, it looks like it gives ability for a Commander to attack on its own. At least that's what it did in the video. Huge thanks for the help man!

No problem. I had intended to go thru everything the Commanders could do a while back and your post reminded me of this one thing I hadn't played around with yet.

When it works it is just a basic attack. One thing I noticed that's different is that if your Commander kills the unit, he does not take the tile like a normal unit does. I think that's a good thing, you don't want to leave him hanging out there.
