Dwarf Fortress

Is anyone else still playing this fabulous game?

I recently started playing it again. I'm still on my first fortress, trying to play with minimal wiki influencs.

Is anyone else still playing this fabulous game?

I haven't played it in a year, but it's still a good sim game in my mind.
I'm still waiting for someone to defy Toady and make it into a mainstream game full of eyecandy and details oozing with spkey bits of slain elephants in gold.
None of the Steam-based attempts have satisfied me yet (e.g. Terraria, Dwarfs?!?!, etc..)

I have to admit, the graphics make things a little too tricky for me to figure out, but then again, I've never really managed to get a handle on the game thusfar.

I love it, but I suck when it comes to the military side of things. I didn't take any items or dwarf skills to my current fortress (Failboat). I managed to get a carpenter's shop and a couple of training axes out of the wagon and went from there - thank Armok wooden axes can cut down trees. Still no pick yet though, the first wagon only brought one hideously expensive steel one and all of my crafts weren't good enough to trade. Giant tigers and jaguars keep invading my surface village. I have three dwarves in hospital with missing limbs - including the doctor. Oops.

Sounds like FUN :)

I don't know if anyone still reads this thread... but here's something you might find amusing:

This is an excerpt from our DF thread on the Paradox Forum... I thought a few of you might find the weapon system interesting. My first large-scale Megaproject.

Full-up Trap Test #2 : This time for sure!

Finally! A chance to field-test my renovated Degoblinizer Mark-2 under virtually perfect conditions.

Four Snatchers set off my traps, and lured a Dwarf outside to recover the cages. The Goblins then sprang three Ambushes in rapid succession, with a Spear-Goblin quickly turning my Legendary Jeweller into a Dwarven shish-kabob.

That's OK, no problem... Dwarves are a renewable resource. It's good opportunities to test my Orbital Defense System that seem to be rare.

After killing my Jeweller, the Gobbos gather around my targetting graticule and examine it curiously... "What's this big X thing?"

They are about to find out.

The intruders... ten Gobbos and three Wolves:

... and directly overhead, the Magma:

TrapTest2.jpg

I send a Dwarf into the Control Room, to pull the lever:

TrapTest3.jpg

Here's a fortuitous stop-action picture of the Magma falling through the air, headed for the Gobbos:

TrapTest5.jpg

It begins landing... as a bonus, the first few blobs of Magma land behind them, cutting off their retreat!

TrapTest6.jpg

... then the main tidal-wave of Lava lands on top of them. Two of the Gobbos are instantly disabled, by full 7/7 blobs of Magma landing right on top of them. The others are forced back towards my Lava-filled moat.

TrapTest7.jpg

One of the Gobbos actually drowns in Magma before he can be burned to death. He's the lucky one of the bunch...

TrapTest8.jpg

... because the tidal-wave of Magma sweeps five of the Gobbos and two of the Wolves right into my Magma-filled moat!

TrapTest9.jpg

Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha...
Welcome to Thunderkeys, you bastards!
Hot enough fer ya?...
Ha-ha-ha-ha-ha...

The remaining three Gobbos try to escape north-westwards, around the side of my tower...

TrapTest10.jpg

... but I've already pulled the lever which controls the Magma-dump on that flank.

TrapTest13.jpg

They are forced back against the tower wall, then cut off by lava flows.

TrapTest14.jpg

The last remaining Wolf is running frantically through my flowing Lava with its head on fire...

TrapTest11.jpg

... and the last Gobbo collapses, burned over every square inch of its body:

TrapTest15.jpg

The Gobbos trapped in my Magma moat are now burning heavily, and giving off clouds of smoke...

TrapTest12.jpg

"Ah... I love the smell of burning Goblins in the morning. It smells like... victory..."

The area around my Fort is a sea of flames, smoke and steam...

TrapTest16.jpg

... and I only pulled TWO of the seven available Magma-drop levers!

I think we can call this a successful test. I GOT EVERY FRIGGIN' ONE OF THEM! None escaped.

Hopefully, the over-flow won't dam the river and drown us all... it's already filled the Pond and turned it into Obsidian.

I have restart-itis at the moment, so to break that I want to play a themed fort. My ideas so far are:

- An Innsmouth-themed fort based on a sea-cult. Furniture should be decorated with shells, fish should be the main food source, and there should be a retractable platform for dumping sacrifices into the sea.

- A desert fort where I build pyramids and other structures out of glass, raise camels, and produce enormous quantities of beer to be locked in the temples as offerings to the gods.

- Another sea fort where I brew rum and ale, and build a big pirate ship in the bay. Arrr.

I think I'm going to try the first one first. I've had the idea for a while, and I've almost started it a couple of times before trying something else. The main problem with the fishy theme is all the free animals you get. I hate waste, so I'll be tempted to set up a meat industry, which inevitably leads to leatherworking, soap making, bone carving, etc. It's a slippery slope!

So I thought it was about time this thread was bumped to let people know about some of the features coming in the next version.

For adventurer mode there's a ton of new stuff, including huge human cities with their own sewer systems to explore, tombs, necromancer towers, and so on. Ah yes, necromancy. I think necromancers can reanimate your dead dwarves in fortress mode, or even bits of them.

For fortress mode you'll be able to create designations in 3D, so making a staircase down to the magma should be far less tedious. Your civilization's historical figures will now be able to immigrate, as will survivors of your abandoned fortresses. Your previous adventurers can also join your fortress as long as their civilization is the same.

You'll also occasionally find vampires coming to your fortress. Vampires are faster and stronger than regular dwarves, but will hide this fact from you in order to blend in. Vampires will occasionally feed from dwarves. I know it can cause fatalities, but I'm not sure how rare this is.

To prevent you from immediately identifying the culprit, the justice system will be reworked to allow for dwarves to be missing before they're reported dead. Witnesses must find a sheriff before they can make accusations, and some dwarves might make false allegations against dwarves they don't like. You'll be given the choice of who to punish for the crimes.

Other improvements include curses and things that might be fun for modders to tinker with. Overall it sounds amazing and I'm very excited for it. I've got no idea how long it'll be before release, but now might be a good time to start following the updates to see what else is coming.

Ah, so we will finally have control over the justice system? No more random hammerings for not producing Slade items?

I had never checked out this legendary game until yesterday but I must say I am super impressed. :D

I've been watching some you-tube videos and the game seems ridiculously complicated but I love it for that.

In an age where games are getting dumbed down, this is a breath of fresh air. Lol.

A lot has changed in the gameplay.

Interesting. People refer to the game as it being the Alpha version.

I can't imagine how the game will be when it's finally released. :crazyeye:
