Dwarf Fortress

Well, a new version is coming out soon, with broken save compatibility, just to let you know.

I knew something stopped me from downloading the current version today, besides being too lazy to retackle the brickwall.

I just took my first crack at this and I am pleased. I really couldn't get a hold of the all ASCII art so I did download this graphic pack to help me (and because most of the other packs require a resolution higher than my little laptop can put out).

Is there a way to plot an area that has stone on it, so that the dwarves relocate the stone somewhere else to make room for, say furniture or wood?

When I start digging out an area for some rooms and such I have so much stone on the floor it takes ages to move it all out, it would be great if they could just move the stone as they need to to make room for other items until I have time to map an area just for stone.

Just map a random area out on the lawn.

You can create a stone stockpile (p->s) or you could order the stone dumped (d->b->d) to a garbage zone (i->g) and then either leave it dumped or reclaim it when you want it (d->b->c).

New version is out. The website has been hammered all day so you may have better luck getting it through the wiki

EDIT: Here is the changelog from the previous release

HOLY F ARE YOU SERIOUS!? Downloading NAO! Wait a second... on April Fool's Day... yeah, had me going. Damn you Toady!
EDIT: NEVER MIND IT'S FOR REAL! TOADY YOU EVIL MASTERMIND! Looks like I found out what I'm doing tonight... and tomorrow morning... and all the time in between. Thank God for Good Friday holiday!

Best would be to get it through the torrent. I managed to snag the DL before anybody else realized it was up :D About 5 minutes later the internets exploded.

There is a bug right now with underground farms requiring muddy floors even on soil layers.

Any underground surface can be used to create a farm plot provided you muddy it first. Due to a bug, this currently includes soil layers, which would normally not require muddying.

I've been forced above ground with my crops until the water on my map thaws. It is mid-summer and nothing doing yet... I hope late-summer, early fall is hot enough or else the dwarves will have to dig deeper to find some underground water hopefully (unless that is frozen too :( )

Be careful about being above ground on a warm (or warmer) climate. Rain will be boiling hot and everyone will die.

Dang, Toady wasn't kidding when he said a buggy release. Anything not alive is UNKILLABLE. A bloody pack of skeletal groundhogs ended my fort because they made my dwarves cancel everything.

Question!
I want to costruct a watchtower so that one to three dwarves can watch over ambushes and other enemies. What orders should I give them and how should I organise scheduling?

Just build a tower, and then station your marksdwarves up at the top of it. Make sure they have Fortifications to look out through.

Thanks, but thats the easy part.

I have around 30 dwarves, so I could afford around 1-5 on constant patrol and training. The thing is - they don't like it. They don't like switching from military to civilian too many times either. I could assign one or two dwarves to a dwelling on a tower, but they constantly need to sleep eat and drink. I need to figure out a way to fulfill their needs and keep them on constant patrol without making them unhappy.

By the way the newest D/L version is this (0.31.12).

I found the original DF somewhat lacking, so I am using Mikemayday's excellent graphics pack.
