E mail alert pop up????

Ok this took me a couple of minutes to notice but I got an e mail alert from MSN the normal pop up thing came. Then another one came and I then relized that neither MSN nor windos messenger were open. I think it has something to do with Windows messenger as a little while ago every time I logged onto the internet a you have to upgrade message would come even through Windows messenger was not running. Nor was MSN explorer running. What is going on?

Had your computer had any sort of error before? As it used to be a feature that if there was a crash but the computer didn't actually restart that the icons in the bottom right hand corner would disappear even if they were still on... This could just be me though.
