I saw this interesting use of a great scientist by Lain. It is semi isolation game against Genghis. He is going for a horse archer rush. It is a commerce poor capital right now, but it's not terrible. His plan is settle first scientist to make horseback riding faster, and use second one (coming before T75) to bulb math. Why not build academy instead of settle here?

My guess is because with a :commerce:-poor capital pre-attack academy and a settled GS (+1:hammers:+7,5:science: pt) are pretty even, but post-attack settled GS starts to win. Of course say post-astro an academy is much better...

It's 100% Pericles gaming, without CRE+PHI that early game wouldn't make a lot of sense.

Hmm, so maybe I don't actually understand how settled GS works. Does the 7.5 get multiplied library type buildings?

:science: produced do go through :science: multipliers, such as Libraries, yes. That's true for commerce turned into beakers through the science slider as much as specialists.

I can't remember last time I went for scientist and built an academy. Is it still worth it? Maybe with philosophical. I always seem to save a GP for golden ages.

I think when going for Astro for example, if you have an extra GS, academy could beat the optic bulb. Or generally when going for a military path that doesn't benefit for bulbs in a while (like engi->cannons). Or at a lower difficulty level if you're planning to go for space and you don't need the bulbs to get ahead in tech short-term. As @sampsa said on the other thread, I think the main competitor for academy is the philo bulb, not a golden age per se (they are not worth *that* much with a small empire).

I don't use academies unless I have a HOF capital, PHI, or sometimes if rushing something off-meta like guilds or engineering that doesn't take kindly to bulbing.
If I get horses with PHI as in lain's game I'd go straight to lib and mass upgrade HAs. I think that's a better use of the trait than settling/math bulb for a slightly better construction attack.

You kind of need a plan with Greeks as if you don't start near fur or sea food you will struggle to get BW/Agriculture and or AH. On higher levels it means skipping a tech.
