to earn easy money during single player only, press the shift key and 4 ($) key to earn 1000 gold.

Interesting. I wonder if this is a cheat, or a bug?

I'm guessing that it's a bug and will be fixed by the next patch

i am not sure how to turn on cheat mode but i did change the ini.file from 0 to chipotle,
that is in the file - C:\Program Files\Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4,
open _Civ4Config, and change CheatCode = 0 to CheatCode = chipotle.

maybe that is why it works for me, dont know.

Didn't work for me either. I experimented a bit and found that holding Alt and hitting F4 does the same thing for me though.
