Earth 18 civs with England

    I have been playing this on noble.won easily with Germany and Rome but having a hard time using England.A typical game with England would be to capture Paris and Madrid as early as possible.I get Madrid as a holy city and Paris as a cultural city and i can do this with losing very little units.Then i get attacked by China who become massive.
    I cant invade them in case Russia attack me.During this or before this i try to get rid of Germany and Italy as long as i know it is possible or if Russia attack them 1st and weaken them.I colonise a few cities in S.America and Africa but find other civs surpass me.Any tips would be good as i found Rome on this level too easy but England too hard.Thank you.

    You got attacked by China as England? It doesn't seem like that should be too much of a problem. And what difficulty do you play on? If China is giving you problems, then get Persia and Russia to cancel open borders and they will be confined to the eastern hemisphere. Also try to build the Colossos early in the game and focus your British cities to working sea tiles for commerce.
    In Britian, you should found three cities on the main isle and one in Ireland.
    If you raze Madrid, you can refound it one tile west as Barcelona and build Potevedro and Cadiz in the corners of Iberia. With the Colossus a city-pakced Iberia can be very profitable.
    Run Mercantilism and use the surplus of food in London to support a bunch of Merchants. Build the Hero Epic and the great merchants and merchants can pay for your entire empire.
    After you conquer west europe play more on the peaceful side and focus on commerce. Get astronomy first and colonize Africa and South America.

    They might not be so good tips, but thats all I've got for you. If you have any trouble with other earth map civ, check out Neal's King of the World were he plays games exploiting strategies for civs on Earth 18 and Earth 32 civs. You fill find them here: link.

    Troubles playing England ?

    It's unlikely. Unless you're undergoing a kraken massive assault, while poseidon decides to sink each of your work boat, I don't know, first how to lose, then how not to win with Elizabeth. Even in the hardest level, when the IA seems to automatically produce great people, Elizabeth can't be defeated and nobody can catch the english research rate in this scenario.

    To win think British! Your starting land, Ireland and Iceland are enought until the discovery of astronomy which you can't discover not in first, only because you're going to research too fast, with no maintenance cost, with no army cost...some triremes are enough, and with the most "mad scientist" leader of the game surrounded by water tiles and living on a truly rich land, you just can't loose, it's impossible.

    In fact, you shouldn't care about Europe and only focus on the british isles and please your leader Elizabeth. Look at the tiles around London, there is Stone (think about early wonders such as stonehenge (for an early cultural ":):):):)" to Louis, the pyramids (for representation and cultural ":):):):)" to Louis) and the hanging gardens (to make more engineers likely to appear, and to turn your civ more "expansive").

    You only need to rush Civil service as soon as possible and research technologies to build the right wonders (mainly what I called the religious quatuor: apostolitic palace(hammers), sistine chapel(culture), Sankoré univ(science), and the spiral minaret(money). Think about the fact that all of theses wonders still have effect post scientific method! all linked to religious buildings). Settle almost all the great people in London. If you do the right things, at the end of the game London would reach a population of 30 and would count as many as 20 great people in it! This means that London is the equivalent of 2,5 time the most powerful foreign city. Thanks to Oxford university, and corporations (alum co), my London always exceed 1000 research point. If i make a permanent alliance with Freddy and next conqueer the world; he will provide me in coal, and London can reach 1500 research point.

    The only Great people I won't settle in London are the ones I gave by discoveries (economics, music, physics), plus my last engineer before the cultural wonder rush in London, only to create my fourth corp (sushi, alum, creative et jewelers)

    The key I think is only to have four cities on the main land, not less

    Actually I found a pretty good strategy for england.

    Build worker
    make some farms and a quarry and road
    get the pyamids (important for later) (swich to representation for now)
    get the great lighthouse
    get the colossus

    getting all 3 wonders is doable.

    when you have those you just expand to every island (dont go for scandinavia as you might be attacked)

    all get the aposolisic palace with christianity
    spinal minirat also helps alot

    when you have the 3 wonders even 1plot island cities can be good.
    you be taking in tons of gold, use this to hurry granary, lighthouse, temple and monestary.

    When you can hurry these buildings you will get 4 hammers for the religious buildings, and then the cities will grow just nicely by themselves.

    I was second in score after china and then setup to colonize latin america.

    I never played as England, but I've already played as France with early warmongering before Feudalism, and England in the hands of AI was a hard nut to crack.

    glad to see an old thread of mine.after learning how to play civ 4 it is good to see what i was doing wrong.this thread is 2 years old now and now i find england probably in the top 2 ivs in this scenario.i have triedmost civs in this scenario and i have yet to see the AI do any type of invasion on the uk.

    I know this is an old thread, anyway I absolutely love the Earth18 Civs map and have recently been playing it a lot (have played all the civs) - recently won a monstrous game on Prince with Mansa Musa and the awesome Next War mod (CultVic turned off, Space win).

    Generally agree with comments above that England is a powerhouse.

    Cities: London on the spot, must be focused on culture, research. Aim to get the stone quickly, Stonehenge etc, game plays itself. Normal Great Lib + Heroic Epic strat, bulb to Liberalism etc works v well.
    2nd City = Aberdeen, on the spot on the east coast in Scotland. Picks up 2xfish, sheep, fir, iron, deer - becomes absolutely monstrous - and also North Sea Oil later - specialized for production.
    3rd City = Plymouth, in the far Southwest of mainland - picks up 1xfish and the coal in Wales (the hills above should always be mined) and in the early game one can micro-manage growth/wonder production between London and Plymouth by swapping the overlapping tiles. Great spot for Maoui Statues.
    4th City = Dublin, in the middle of the East of Ireland to catch the fish. Not very productive - specialize for commerce, GP farm. Also Louis will settle it (with some horribly misplaced city) if you do not.

    Expansion: very difficult to expand safely in Scandinavia albeit some very sweet spots (Oslo - too near German culture; Bergen/Alesund - never very productive, placeholder spot for the silver, whale and later oil; Trondheim - very good spot, difficult to defend v Germans/Russians; Lulea or Hammerfest - great spots however all of the previous points plus almost certainly already settled by Germany.

    If you do go Scandi, you will certainly need very heavy defence and good blocking.
    I had a game where I founded a religion which the comp placed in Bergen/Alesund - yup, then pretty much constant war with Germans and/or Russians was guaranteed.

    So if one sticks to the four British cities, one already has a massive advantage relative to eg France and Spain. Beeline to Astronomy (free tech on Liberalism) and colonize all the sweet spots in South America (of course never trade Astro and NAmerica is pretty busy). Totally winning/won position most of the time.

    One point is that Montezuma will probably be very strong but behind in tech and dow you as soon as you settle in the Americas. I always settle Caracas or Gyana (north coast - spot with fish, corn and oil or the amazing spot between (and on) the river and sea which catches the fish in BFC and 2xAluminium and 1xgems). First SA settlement needs 2 galleons - 4xmuskets, worker, settler. 1 or even 2 muskets will not be enough if Monty lands a stack of Maces, cats etc.

    Point about Uranium: one may repeat history and go for Melbourne and/or Queensland in SE/NE Australia. A great spot in Queensland catches copper and uranium in its BFC - however Asoka/Qin/Toku will already have settled at least some of Australia.

    Also 2 x Uranium on the West African coast - Gabon and Namibia - if you don't mind fighting for it.
    Either of the two river squares north the mouth of the Kongo are both awesome - if you want to raze/settle. First square (Pointe Noire) catches the Uranium in BFC, second square (still on coast and river but IE), does not however absolutely great spot (Brazzaville) if you can keep the resource culturally.

    Also if going for cultural victory, Paris will probably flip and there is Uranium in the BFC - however Spanish/Roman/German culture is a serious problem.

    Anyway, by some or all of these methods one obtains all the vital modern resources. SAmerica becomes an incredibly productive base with some incredible cities - it really almost does not matter where you settle after Caracas and Gyuana though fwiw I prefer (and in this order): Belem (1E 1SE of spice), Campina Grande (1 NE of gems - with oil and marine resource to north in BFC), Vitoria (catches coal, fish, aluminium and gems in BFC), Passo Fundo on the incredible spot slightly inland on river but still on coast). As for the barb city, it is better with the above placement to raze it and found Buenos Aires (sorry to any Urugyuans out there).

    A few other good spots to the west and south remain though these will never be great cities.

    Of course, this SAmerican strat works with France/Spain/Mali etc if you get there first.

    Anyway, just my own take on how to play England - I await the ridicule for posting to such an old thread, not to mention any n00bish tendencies revealed by the above ;)

    When I usually play(which I do a lot) I prefer to build London on the Horses. This method allows me to snag the coal and the deer (along with all the other resources the starting place supplies) and it greatly reduces the overlap with Paris. I usually find that this allows me to build more wonders and grow more to fuel my GP driven tech strategy. I also prefer a scottish city to the west of the sheep, that snags both fish, the fur, the iron, and the sheep. This city can produce some wonders and supply the majority of my military units when London is busy building other things. I prefer to build my Irish city as far south as I can. This has no overlap and with moai statues can work its large amount of sea squares somewhat efficiently. Generally, I also try to stay out of European conflicts, only taking paris and madrid if I have a large military, which is never a priority. To be honest, Paris and Madrid are not needed because London will often be a better city and I have no need for a holy city in Madrid because my Great Merchants supply me with more than enough gold. South America is where my expansion occurs and I prefer to build my first city one west of eastern brazilian oil, which works an iron, an oil, two gems, and a gold. I then work my way over from their.

    The most important part though, is the tech. Elizabeth is financial and the use of the Collosus wonder can be huge. My placementof London allows it to work upwards of 5 sea tiles, about 25 commerce total. Also, London can become a GP farm with a GP almost every 10 turns, possible with the use of the Philisophical Trait, Pacifism Civic (With a small army it can be amazing, no upkeep also), and Parthenon and National Epic Wonders you can get plus 350% GP points. With the use of many wonders (Pyramids, Collosus, and Great Lighthouse, among others) and specialists great people with the use of representation can be the driving force in your inevitable tech advantage. With a huge tech advantage , the Redcoat could easily conquer an obsolete Europe and with the help of South America, you can win a space race victory, or just conquer the world if you are so inclined.

    I expect disdain for my unorthodox placement of London, but try it just might surprise you.

    It's quite easy. Get a scout to find asoka. Get elephants (for horses he will trade them). Then just smash everyone. Worked for me on immortal. Elephant rushes with european civs in general are very solid strategies albeit with most you can axe/HA rush.

    I beat Earth 18 England on Emperor by ticking the OCC option. I won via space race. I actually found it quite easy. France, being creative, put some cultural pressure on my lands (water, actually) at the start, but you spam so many wonders that problem solves itself. Eventually France got uppity, so I killed them about the time I got redcoats.

    I never really was a true Immortal or Deity player, but I considered myself an Emperor player. (I could win over 75% of the games on Emperor.) But I found Earth 18civs England OCC to be quite easy to win with minimal problems on Emperor.

    I've only every had two cities on the mainland, with Dublin in Ireland.
    The two cities being London and Manchester.
    With maintenance costs, i always figured a third city inside the culture borders would be a waste.
    I guess not.
    I always have trouble expanding into Europe...

    One way to look at cities is as devices to convert potential resources on the land to something useful. Two small cities close to each other cover more land than one big city. Not all cities have to grow to be megalopolises to be successful.

    I use the World Builder to remove Monte, which allows Roosevelt to expand in North America. Makes for a more entertaining game.

    I researched Writing before I built the Oracle in York(placed as recommended in this thread), and received Code of Laws for free. I also researched music first, and planted the GA in London to fend off Paris' strong culture. I've stolen a lot of techs.

    I was first to get Optics(stole Compass and Machinery), and set sail to North America and bought Roosevelt's map. Then got the +1 for navigating the globe. Stole Guilds to unlock Gunpowder, stole that.

    I tried to get Philosophy first, but failed, and set out to get Liberalism. I used it to get Astronomy, and then set my :science: slider to 0% and ramped up the :espionage:(I'm getting 322 points per turn at 70%).

    I set my next research target to Assembly Line, as I want to build The Pentagon. I have stolen Nationalism, next will be Constitution. I don't need to get Communism first as I have 3 planted Great Spies in London already, and I can steal it if I want to build The Kremlin(hopefully).

    I am now trying to colonise South Africa and South America, but I am very weak and risk attack from everyone. I have had to lose state religion, as they all outnumbered me and hated me :civ5angry: . So hopefully some of their religion can spread to me and I can adopt it to try to preserve myself long enough to build a stronger military.

    I will upload a saved game if anyone is interested.
