Earth18 More Mansa Musa Madness

You are correct about HBR vs IW. We already have the horse. It does mean we are committing to taking out another AI or maybe two, but it is worth fixing a few things:

Horseback Riding instead of Iron Working.
Orleans should have been kept. I looked at a map this morning. It sits next to that green hill tile with the stone. This is probably where Hannibal crossed the Alps to invade Rome.
Captured workers could have been microed better. At the time I was thinking there was nothing to do. We could build a road to Orleans instead.
It does mean we have to do something to deal with the annoying Rome culture.

I think it's worth going back to fix some micro. It should not take too long. Hindsight says I should have stopped after taking out Paris.

Next target:
Germany has 5 cities and Copper. I do not believe we can take that out with Skirmishers.
Rome has 5 cities and Copper and maybe Iron. I do not believe we can take that out with Skirmishers.
We have not yet met Greece, so I do not know how many cities they have or if they have Copper. It is not likely they have Iron. They probably settled into Anatolia.
Egypt has 3 cities and no metal. They would be a great target with Horse Archers.

I replayed from the Fall of Paris to the Fall of London. There were some changes in worker micro. We kept Orleans and renamed it Averni. We changed our research to Horseback RIding. The replay looks like this.

This gets us Horseback Riding in 10 Turns. For 5 of those turns, we have guaranteed peace with Rome and Open Borders. We can scout them out and see what they have. We can play peaceful builders for 10 Turns, but our units are costing a good bit of cash.

We don't have that much, either. 8 Skirmishers, 3 Warriors, and 1 Chariot, all spread around 5 Cities. 2 Galleys and 5 Workers, too.

There is a goodie hut in Ireland. We can quickly build a Scout and check it out. Then we can sent the Scout towards Greece and see how many cities they have built. I can play out a few more turns tonight.

Turn 123 / 925 BC - Horseback Riding

We took a few turns of lack of action to build up our cities a little bit and look around. While working so efficiently to get the worker off the Isle of Britain, I did not think to move Gannibal. It looks like the islands will need a Galley anyway to move workers to and from.

We checked out Rome quickly:

We did not find Christianity anywhere. It must also be somewhere in the New World.

Rome still does not have Iron Working! That means we could have been attacking 8 turns ago when we did. I guess I was thinking with Louis out of the picture and no wonders captured and two production monsters and access to stone, we had a valid shot at some failgold and that would push us towards construction.

We can obtain the Alphabet if we want. We probably have to trade away both Mathematics and Horseback Riding. We already gave away our advantage with HBR. We have an advantage with Mathematics. The benefit I can think of is opening trade with everybody, a discount towards Currency, and converting hammers into beakers. We are already building failgold and have a better way to obtain the Alphabet. :)

Alphabet is what I call a 30 point technology. (30 x 27 = 810) HBR is a 25 point technology. (675) We can invest a little bit into the Alphabet and maybe acquire it for HBR. I already mentioned there is likely a better way to obtain the Alphabet.

Rome still does not have Iron Working!

550BC to 350BC

It took us this long to get to Construction. 12 Turns. Technology:
T148 Alphabet from Asoka for Horseback Riding and Masonry
T150 Construction
MM was always a tech junkie, and we already traded away our advantage in horse technology to the Egyptian, so we might as well get something for it. Masonry is also going around and well known. We managed to get our benefit from it already.

I did not take a tech picture. We could trade away our Mathematics advantage for a couple of easy religious techs. However, I am thinking we hang on to this advantage. Also, we do not have much religion right now - just two cities. This is really ironic, because we are a spiritual civ. I guess we are SBNR.

Rome now has Iron Working and Legions. However, we have an easy route into Rome. If we set up an attack, we will catch them completely by surprise.

I will dispense with most of the builds. We failed in our failgold bids.
Spoiler :

upload_2022-5-7_18-33-38.jpeg

On the plus side, we are spiritual and we have access to all of the government civics. We went with Representation for a few turns. We did not get much out of it, because we are not running many specialists and we are still below much of the happy cap. Also on the plus side, we have 8 cities. 7 of them are coastal. 3 of them are on an island.

I am surprised we were able to get the Pyramids in 485BC and the Great Lighthouse in 395BC. I am also surprised that Qin appears to be struggling a little bit in terms of game score and that he did not build any wonders. Christianity appears to be in the new world. If we want to find :jesus: then that is where we must go. It was probably founded in the Southeastern USA. I am guessing Monty built the Great Wall and the Temple of Quetzalcoatl.

In the Old World, we have not yet found Mongolia or Japan. To do that, we will have to run the gauntlet with our Scouts and maybe make it to China. Or we keep looking around and wait for India to expand far enough to encounter them. Or we wait for Mongolia to find us. I do not expect monster civs from them, but this game has been full of surprises.

We researched Construction instead of Currency. This commits us to at least a little war. It is 350BC and we are too far west to recreate Alexander's Empire. It is close enough we can do a rematch of Rome versus Carthage. We have Iberia and Africa. We have Elephants. We have a way across the Alps. We have Gannibal. We also have a bunch of secret Phoenician trading posts to bankroll our war effort.

Now we know where their Combat 2 Legions were coming from. The Roman Empire lives on in the east, but their Legions will soon be no more. So far this war cost us 3 Catapults and 1 Elephant for a total of 315 hammers.

Technology:
T158 Currency
T160 Meditation - We took a bribe from Hatty and gave up Mathematics for Polytheism, Meditation, and 95gp.
T160 Polytheism
T161 Priesthood
T162 Monotheism
T163 Monarchy from Hatty for Construction
T164 Code of Laws

We are getting ready to attack Illyria, but really need more catapults. The Romans have their remaining Legions there. An alternative might be to look for a way to take out their source of copper. Then they will be no longer building axes and spears and we can attack with something.

Colonial costs kicking in. 4 cities in England was a mistake. You really didn't need to settle all of those. Grab the mainland cities to stop AI like Eygpt grabbing empty land.

Taking down Romans when Eygptians just have archers?

You might take that city but i am guessing big losses. Especially if first catapult dice rolls go badly. Praets are a pain! Could you of built up a bigger army by now? More catapults would of been useful as this makes follow up units more likely to win.

Least you cleared the Rome Culture.

Why are you building Court Houses? your costs on mainland are 5-6 gold a turn. If they were 12-13 I would understand. Market in London is bad idea too. Spam units take over the world.

Let the AI build you wonders and capture them.

I saw the colonial costs of England, but do not yet see it as an issue, because the trade income seemed to be paying for it. I can take another look at the costs. The idea came from a very old article about playing England on the Earth map. Three cities could have grabbed all the resources. Two cities if we want the Crabs, but I find Cornwall fighting London for production tiles. That would prevented Germany from claiming Ireland.

Egypt at the time - I considered them to be not a threat and thought if I take out Rome, then I only have a minimum number of Praets to take out. I think they built 6 or so.

The Rome stack - I ended up retreating a square to let some other units catch up. The stack of Praets moved on to attack Germany and got wiped by German engineered Axes. (They got a free shock promotion from an event.)

The city on the hill was a pain to take out. Then we marched into Scythia. Keeping that city was also a pain and no gain. It is very interesting that in 70AD we destroyed the Roman Empire, the same year the Roman Empire destroyed Jerusalem - and many years later, we would found Judaism.

From there, with a big advantage, my next choice should have been Germany.

Losses to this point have been:
5 Skirmishers (1 in Spain, 4 in France)
7 Catapults
2 War Elephants
1 Scout (This was the price paid to find China, Mongolia, and Japan - and probably nothing gained by it.)

So I count 705 hammers to take out Rome.

From here, I caught a bad case of Wonderitis and played a bunch of turns just building.
T188 Hanging Gardens
At the time I was thinking I could keep all the great engineer points together. That did not work out.
Only benefit of this as opposed to captured is the free population.
T189 Mausoleum
So far it looks like I built it to get an extra 5 turns of Golden Age from the free Artist we got from Music.
This might be better off captured.
T197 Colossus
Coast tiles are what I either whip or convert to specialists. It goes with your capture rating.
T201 Parthenon
What you said about capturing instead applies.
T204 The Great Library
I like this to go in a specific city, if I manage to win the race.
T227 Apostolic Palace

T250 University of Sankore
This could also be captured.

T246 Unruly philosopher in Lixus. I went for the free Academy in exchange for a 2 penalty in unhappiness. I believe that penalty is permanent.

So a bunch of turns went by and we had a bad case of Wonderitis - or we can say the game degenerated into what I end up doing playing a game on Chieftain level and we got so far ahead of the AI we end up trying to build everything.

I think...... You are patiently trying to explain to me how to win. (by making a plan to take out an AI, then making another plan to take out another AI) In a way, it makes me think of way back in the days of the original Warcraft game and I had a reputation for a while of attacking when I had the opportunity, before my opponent was able to build up better troops (or water elemental) and I called the skill winning.

Finally, our warlike hero, Genghis Khan rode in from the Steppes and begged us to start a war, because the game was getting boring.

What I should have done was fortify the Seine River and use that as impenetrable defense for when the German stack comes rolling in. It finally did when we were trying to set up an assault on Munich. We were able to take out a few of the units using a single Woodsman 2 mace as bait to take out a couple of chariots and a couple of catapults. Then we were able to take out a few more units on an open field, but did not have quite enough Knights to finish the job and with a diminished stack, they retreated into Munich.

It looks like Germany will capitulate. That means they get to keep Scandinavia and Ireland and we can move our stack elsewhere.

Nobody is close on the race to Liberalism. At the time, I was thinking to get Military Tradition, Chemistry, and get a slingshot to either Rifling or Steel.

Russia is the closest target.

Based on the screenshot, it looks like I have no idea just how many units I need to take out two Saladin Longbows. Meanwhile on the Russian front, the answer to that is.... more than I initially fielded..... a lot more.

I have not yet learned how to count just how big the Chinese stack is. However, it looks like the entire stack was holed up in Vladiviostok and it took a few turns to bring in reinforcements and finish the job. Then we continued eastward with Minoan.

I think that broke the Chinese stack. That was a lot of units destroyed. They have a lot of cities and they are about 10 turns from Assembly Line and Infantry. They are also protective. They should be a pain to take out. We might have a few turns of advantage if we move quickly on it.

Our technology is moving slowly.
T343 Combustion - We can rule the waves.
We might get to Assembly Line next turn - or it might take an extra turn. It does not matter much. We can get our upgrades.

Body Count:
14 Cannon (6 more were lost, 2 in Madagascar, 3 in Mecca, and the other one against that Chinese stack of doom)
11 Catapults
5 Skirmisher
4 Longbow
3 Maces
2 Knights
2 Cavalry
2 War Elephant
2 Caravel
1 Scout
1 Warrior
1 Sword
1 Galley
1 Rifleman
1 Trebuchet
1 Horse Archer

Saladin CG3 Longbows on Hills were a pain and it cost us some cannons. CR3 Cannon on a Chinese Stack of Doom holed up in a city had a ring to it.

Do we press an 8 turn advantage over the Chinese? Can we even get there in time? It should not take them long to upgrade their troops to Infantry, because we sure killed a lot of them.

T364 - 1708 - We take Beijing

For some reason, the Chinese are researching Infantry, but they do not have Rifling. That is making their troops less than what their general tech level should reflect. No Military Tradition. I do not see any Cuirassiers. No Rifling. No Cavalry. Just Knights and Muskets and CKN. Lots of them. So we set up a long march down the Silk Road on what I thought was the quickest route to Beijing, so that we can start carving up a slice.

T359 Macau - It took us 7 turns to get there.

We had one good reason to keep the city, just one good reason. It is the final rallying point on the way into China. It is kind of like a bad city site on the way to a captured capital, except instead of building 20 axes, we are building 20 infantry. The units with 10 exp got upgraded. The other ones have to fight. It is all we can afford right now.

@LincolnOfRome - In honor of your Spain game and your creative naming of cities, I renamed the city Las Moscas. No hay trigo. No hay arroz. No hay cobre. No hay nada. It is in the middle of a desert. I could call it Las Vegas in the middle of a desert, but wrong continent. So I called it Las Moscas.

It looks like we have a little race to Fascism and the free Great General. The Chinese are 3 turns away and racing for it. The choice we have is to finish it now or finish it just before they do. It is just a short delay of upgrading infantry and artillery.

The next choice is if we should move our troops north or south from here. I am leaning south. We can link up with our little navy there.

No body count this time. So far we lost one more cannon.

Technology is moving along slow as usual.
T365 Fascism
T368 Electricity
T377 Flight

Body Count:
17 Cannon (It looks like we lost 3 kicking China off the continent.)
11 Catapults
5 Skirmisher
4 Longbow
3 Maces
3 Cavalry (We lost one more attacking a city rather than waiting for slow artillery.)
2 Infantry (The Japanese started to upgrade to Infantry as well. Toku Infantry will be a pain.)
2 Artillery (The same thing happened kicking the Chinese off the Continent. They also have Infantry.)
2 Knights
2 War Elephant
2 Caravel
1 Scout
1 Warrior
1 Sword
1 Galley
1 Rifleman
1 Trebuchet
1 Horse Archer

The Chinese have been removed from the mainland and have 8 cities remaining on various islands. Their city at Manilla will be a pain to take out.
The Japanese have at least 3 cities and probably more.
Both are willing to capitulate, but right now, I feel like just taking them out.

You need to do the maths on land. Might be quicker to cap US 3 ai. They will be backwards.

Hah, if you build a settler from the city, you'll have to rename it "el gusano."

Nice job on the writeup. I'll have to get back to my Mansa game.

Okay You pretty much need to capture the rest of the AI continent cities here. I think capture islands and ignore Aztecs. You could take 8-10 settlers across ocean and settler southern America, No need to actually attack Aztecs. Not sure what barb cities will be here. Spam settlers and ramp up your military on the continent. You should have at least 100 attacking units now with 59 cities.

It looks like I did get distracted by buildings and wonders as opposed to units, so we have a game that should have been finished a couple hundred years ago, but we are grinding our way to the finish. One thing I just discovered is it is much easier to play in the Modern age if I move soundtracks around. Right now, I'm playing with the Civ4 Colonization soundtrack.

Added: Also interesting is the Aztechs have rifles. I think the Inca are helping them.

Turn 410 - 1800 - The end of the Chinese and Japanese

The Chinese are banished from the continent, so we have to attack them on the Islands.
T378 Ningbo on the Southern Philippines
T381 Yangzhou on Borneo
T385 Kunming on Jakarta
T386 Kaifeng with an incredible stroke of luck badly injuring the one and only defending infantry. The rest of the defenders were easier.
Kaifeng is located on a hill and defended by a mountain.
T389 Haerbin in Western New Guinea
T392 Baoding in Eastern New Guinea
T395 Chongquing and the Chinese are defeated

Now we have some resources to go after the Japanese.
T400 Kyoto
T405 Nagoya on the southern part of the Japanese Archipalego
T407 Izumo in northern Japan
T410 Nara and the Japanese are finally destroyed
I have no idea why I kept this city. I believe it is because I pressed the wrong button.

T390 Industrialism and we are distracted by spamming Industrial Parks instead of Tanks
T395 Plastics
T399 Rocketry
T403 Radio
T406 Mass Media - There seems to be no pattern to my research
T409 Refrigeration - but the tech rate seems to be moving quickly now

Distracted by Wonders
T378 The Pentagon
T387 Broadway

Body count:
18 Artillery (Wow! It took us a full 16 Artillery to wipe out the Chinese and Japanese!)
5 Infantry (That would be 3 more.)

Why send 20 tanks to take out 2-3 barb cities?

Where is your main stack? Is it the stack of 20 infantry near Persian western border?. You should be wiping out the Persians you need their land? There should be a stack of artilery with your main stack. I can't see it.

To win the game you need the mainland continent land. Japan is helpful but the bulk of land is with Perisians and Indians.

Just spotted 20-30 or so units with Japan's islands. Tad overkill. Lots of units scattered about but all need transporting to where they can take out cities.

You are making a meal of this. You lack purpose and that was somewhat true from the start. Learn the killer instinct and don't build unis when you want tanks and artilery.
