East African Federation

What's the idea behind that federation? What problems it will make easier to solve?

I don't know enough about the situation to comment with expertise but with the volatility of the region it seems more like a pipe dream than anything concrete.

I bet you just hit 'random article'. Anyway sounds like an interesting idea; not quite sure what it would achieve but federations are always interesting.

No, I heard about it a while back and decided to read up on it, actually it dosent seem to be that much of a pipe dream, I think its actually quite realistic. By African standards it would be a very powerful country... I think in general Africa could do with more centralisation and more African countries that can stand on their own two feet.

Considering that the latest the proposal was talked of was 2004 and we've gotten radio silence (as well as renewed problems such as election breakdown in Kenya) since, I don't think any Federation is popping up in the near future.

It's aesthetically pleasing. Not gonna meet those 2011 and 2013 goals, I'd bet.

Edit: never mind, there appear to be concrete plans for the introduction of the EA Shilling.

If it does pop out anyway, I doubt Burundi or Rwanda would enjoy the experience much. Firstly, they are much smaller in population and will definitely bicker with the other three states over funding issues in a Federal State.
And Burundi and Rwanda would be entering an "old boys club". Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda was once British East Africa.
I think there might be a shot in this. Aside from some small election violence in Kenya, the area is quite stable and economic growth there is rather promising.

I agree, and it would be a good example for other countries. I think Africa is way too divided

The region's pretty stable.

This would be awesome!

Really don't see the point of including Rwanda and Burundi though. Different language, different culture.

I blame Belgium.

What does it say about me that this is all that I have gotten out of the whole thing? It looks "nice" on a map?

Theres nothing wrong with that at all, for the same reasons I wish the Central Asian former SSRs would merge. Appalling borders.

Yeah it would look nice on the map.

I think this is a great idea and it will most likely happen in the future (dont think 2015 though) there are already plans to introduce common currency!
