Eastern (Chinese/Japanese) History Books??

Could anyone suggest a book or two for a broad look at Eastern history? Or, if that is *too* broad, than a broad look at Chinese history, and maybe Japanese also. I've been interested in learning about the far east, but can't find a single book in the local American stores. Tsk tsk, a pox upon the self-centered West.

Try a university bookstore. I got a copy of one aptly titled "A Brief History of China and Japan" - only 500 pages or so! It was brief in the sense of short summaries of factors involved, but thorough in mentioning many different elements at play, both politically and socially. Sorry, I can't recall the authors...
