not sure if this is in the right place, but anyway:

i modded the AEGIS cruiser into a crusier, and now for some reason civ3 crashes whenever it is built, or it is selected in the build queue inside of a city.

The units stats are:

New Name: Cruiser
Cost: 16
Pop Cost: 0
Move: 7
Transport: 0
ZOC: NO
Att: 38
Def: 32
Op Range: 0
Bombard: 25
Range: 2
ROF: 4

Requires Tech: Combustion
Requires Resource: Oil
Upgrade To:

Abilities: Ranged Attack AND Turn to Attack
Available to: All except Barbarian
Class: Sea
Civpedia Entry: PRTO_Aegis_Cruiser
AI Strat: Naval Power
Standard Orders: ALL
Special Actions: Bombard
Worker/Engineer: NONE
Air Missions: NONE
Icon: 39 (the AEGIS one)

So can anyone please tell me why this is crashing the game? Hopefully its something simple that i missed.

Also what does "Turn to Attack" mean in unit abilities?

so then i have to delete the AEGIS part of the folder name, and all the files inside it?

Did you create a new unit? Or just rename the AEGIS Cruiser to Cruiser and then change the stats?

Whatever the case, it sounds like the game is crashing because you didn't specify what graphics your new unit should use.

Go into your Art\units directory and create a new directory with a name IDENTICAL to your new/changed unit (in this case, 'Cruiser').

Then go into the Art\units\Aegis Cruiser directory, copy all of the files, and then paste the selected files into your Art\units\Aegis Cruiser directory.

One last step: Rename the 'Aegis Cruiser.ini' file in your 'Cruiser' directory to 'Cruiser.ini'.

Your unit should work now.

BTW, there's a way to create new units that use the same graphics as the other units, ie you could have both a Cruiser and an Aegis Cruiser in the same game. However, for some reason the editor grayed out the 'Add' and 'Delete' buttons for the units screen.

To add a new unit, go to the units tab and double-click the unit selection drop box (this serves to highlight the box). Then press TAB once so the 'Rename' button next to the unit box is highlighted. Then press 'a' on your keyboard, and voila! The option to add a new unit.

To delete a unit, select the unit you wish to delete from the dropdown box, TAB over to Rename and hit 'd'. You can then delete the unit.

I hope I made this clear enough.

PS Oh yeah, I just noticed that you selected 'Turn to attack' for your Cruiser. Since the Aegis Cruiser graphics have the attack animation firing from the front, this will look bad in the game - the cruiser won't be shooting at the enemy! I recommend that you deselect this option.

I am not 100% sure, simwiz2, but I think that "turn to attack" means tht when two units do battle, they rotate 90 degrees and slug it out side to side ("broadside to broadside") in the combat graphics, rather then nose to nose. For instance galleys and caravels fignt each other this way.

I've never built an AEGIS crusier (my games have pretty much always been decided well before the near end of the Modern era) so I cannot say, but Caesar_Augustus stated that the normal AEGIS cruiser battle graphics is the attack going out forward rather then as a broadside ("turn to attack"). While his other points about the game files could explain your crash problem, its possible that this change (presumably AEGIS cruiser does NOT have "turn to attack" selected, and you do) is the cause of the crashes. "Possible" I said, not 100 % sure. You might experiment with making all the other fixes hs says, and leaving "turn to attack" selected (after all CA DO prefer to fight broadside to the enemy, NOT by having the enemy "Cross the T" on them (the enemy broadside to to them, with ones bow pointing directly at the enemy- it restricts the number of guns you can bear on the enemy while he has no such restriction). If after making Caesar_Augustus recommend fixs and leaving "turn to attack" selected, you still have crashes, then deselecting "turn to attack" to return to the AEGIS crusier's normal attack graphics mode solves the problem, you'll have your answer to the cause as well as fixed the problem. Of course its possible that the "turn to attack" AND something in the other stuff are BOTH causing your problems!

BTW AEGIS ships in real life probably actually attack as often as broadside (sides ways relaitve to the direction of motion) as they do "nose to nose" (ie forward), AND all other 360 degree angles, because most of them (all but the very earliest versions) use verticle launch tubes for missles, rather then turrent mounted guns. (I believe SOME of them DO have at least one turrent gun, but their main punch is is the missles.)

Good luck, and please post if you get the problem solved. I had been toying with making changes very similar to yours, but want to have both the AEGIS cruiser and a regular one, so I will follow the advice of Caesar_Augustus, but your experiece will tell me if it will work or not.

GOOD LUCK!

i made a test unit, one that i could make immediately so i wouldnt have to wait until industrial age to find out if it was fixed. i renamed warrior to warriors, the loaded civ3. i made my first city (warrior in queue) and it crashed as i expected. then i made a warriors folder in the civ3/art/units folder and copied the files from the warrior folder into the warriors folder, and renamed all the warrior-something files in the folder to warriors-something. i deleted all my savegames and restarted my computer, loaded up civ3, started the mod, built the city and it still crashed

Moving to Civ3 Creation & Customization from Civ3 General Discussions....you will probably find more help here.

When you change the name of unit, you change files in the Art dir.
just the unit dir filename and the word file on the inside.
if the .flc names inside the word file are not changed, you can leave the .flc file in the unit dir. alone.

I would recommend not changing exiting units, but adding new ones. you can copy the unit dir. (civIII/art/unit/warriors as an example) to another dir ( outside civIII and copy not cut).
you can have mig25 useing the jet fighters .flc files and sounds by
coping into another dir and changing unit dir name and word file name. with the editor you can add to into the game with different status. don't forget to put the renamed unit dir into the civIII/art/units/ dir!
