Whenever you get depressed think about how much worse your life could be.

Not an ordinary prison, these guys gonna come out broken, if they come out.

Short term crime is way down, long term I'd be curious to see how this affects El Salvadorian society.

Demand for tattoo artists gotta be way down that's for sure.

Place is pretty disgraceful, idea is pretty disgraceful. When a state fears a state developing within it, formed by anti-social gang rules, I suppose this is effectively a way to war against it without actually massacring people. Odd confluence of many modern trends in America looms over it all: I think the Salvadorean government would rather do it the arguably darker old school way, but fear the reaction of our moral horror, and consequently go with human warehousing at scale.

We in America may want to ask ourselves about our drug policies and the health of our communities that such organizations serving that demand would arise.

Do you think this is . . . good advice? For someone who's feeling depressed?
If you're depressed I suggest whatever works really (minus self destructive things like alcohol).

Anyway you can grasp at even slightly improved well being I'd suggest to take it. Anyway who's been depressed knows what I mean. The worst thing to do when depressed is be passive.

Comparison with others is tricky and often toxic but if seeing how much worse life could be helps you be grateful for what you have it can be a useful tool.

Fair enough, I tend to view the comparison as tricky and often toxic as well (which is why I asked).

Apparently El Salvador now imprisons more than 1.5% of its population.

That's even more than Louisiana and Mississippi which are at about 1%
