For those interested in such topic :http://spaceflightnow.com/news/n0312/03spacewx/

Get your magnetic umbrella ready.

Edit: quote:

However, space storms, which can dump 1,000 billion watts, more than America's total electric-generating capacity, into the Earth's magnetic field, indicated the shield was not impenetrable.

Who are interested to start a buisness ; Space power inc.

I already seen "The Core" Ad in CivFanatics and I still have that "ELECTRICAL SUPERSTORMS!!!" im my mind :ack:

The Core was the first thing I thought of too. Anybody else hear that we're overdue for Earth's magnetic field to reverse? There's geological proof of it happened on a regular basis throughout history, and it's time for it again. That'll probably cause more problems than the Y2K thing.

I think Microsoft products have been built with the assumption that up is down, black is white and right is wrong, so maybe a polar reversal will help a lot of computer users.

More discovery again in that kind of field.

Edit: A short extract.

Large-scale destruction of magnetic fields in the sun's atmosphere likely powers enormous solar explosions, according to a new observation from NASA's Ramaty High Energy Solar Spectroscopic Imager (RHESSI) spacecraft.

The explosions, called solar flares, are capable of releasing as much energy as a billion one-megaton nuclear bombs. The destruction of magnetic fields, called magnetic reconnection, was a leading theory to explain how solar flares could suddenly release so much energy, but there were other possibilities as well. The new picture from RHESSI confirms large-scale magnetic reconnection as the most likely scenario.

I dont really think so, most commercial ships and airplanes have gyro compasses wich are not at all affected by magnetism. Regular compasses will be another story, but who really uses them anyways?
