Elian Gonzalez Joins Cuba's Communist Youth Union

Gonzalez Says He Would Never Let Down Fidel Castro

HAVANA (CBS4) ― Eight years after a headline making international custody fight which ended with his return to his father in Cuba, Elian Gonzalez has joined Cuba's Young Communist Union.

In an article in Cuba's communist youth newspaper, Juventud Rebelde, the 14-year old Gonzalez said he would never let ex-President Fidel Castro and his brother Raul Castro down. He joined more than 18-thousand others who joined the group on Saturday.

In 2000, Gonzalez' mother was killed when a boat carrying them to the U.S. capsized in the Florida Straits. Elian, who was 6 years old at the time, and two other refugees were found clinging to an inner tube for survival. After his rescue the boy stayed with relatives in South Florida until a long tug of war over custody end with armed federal agents seizing him from his great uncle's Miami home. Elian then returned to Cuba with his father.

The nerve of that little bastard!

Never gonna float around and desert you.

At least we got a good South Park out of it.

If nothing else, it gives me a chance to revive an old photo!

Elian pledged his loyalty to a bygone Communist dinosaur (Fidel) and the guy who appears to be dismantling Cuban Communism one brick at a time (Raul).

Just another kid who's got his wires crossed. I met hundreds of people like that in college--it seems to be some years after graduation before reality sets in and the wires come uncrossed.

The amount of dominos I ate durring the time this kid was in America makes me hungry just by hearing his name. ..... damn :cringe:

I would have been much more impressed if he said he'd "Never give them up, never let them down, never going to run around and desert them."

Oh no, no more Elian, please no, no no.

C'mon people. I'm doing the best I can with what I got here. I thought it was very funny to imagine the kid rick'rolling his interview. Of course, living in a communist country lacking internet access, free TV, free radio or free people... he probably has never heard of rick'rolling. That's kinda part of the joke.

I added the float around line... cause you don't run from Cuba... c'mon... that's funny stuff.

It's okay, Eco. I laughed. *patpat*

Man, from this story, I can see that there is definitive proof that America is the greatest country in the world, and that Cuba is the worst.

I think Iran is worse, and a few African nations. Saudi and Syria too. Probably some others.

At least communists are not misogynists, fundamentally.

All I can think is "meh". Every kid does things that their family can use to embarass them later. They'll all laugh about it later.

Why did the people who rescued him need MP5s?

There was supposed to be a "human wall" surrounding the home and rabid supporters of his Miami family in agressive positions. Well, turns out the human-wall was apparently on break or sleeping, as none of them mustered to position, and other resistance amounted to a response of merely 'WTH'.

Big talk, but when the feds came it was no Waco.

And yes, I agree, he was rescued.
