Emperor Cookbooks. Toku (Japan)

I’m a Monarch player just moving up to Emperor now, so I’ll give this a go for the practice! I’m on 3.19 (why doesn’t everyone just upgrade?) so my save won’t be compatible for everyone, but I’m sure mine won’t be the best game anyway and at least a good proportion of players will be able to load mine up to see it. I’ll try to keep posting lots of screenies for you all!

Round 1 – 4000BC to 1500BC

Spoiler :

Well I decide to settle in place, it’s quite a nice looking capitol we’ve got here :). To start with I go for...

Build Queue, Work Boat-->Work Boat-->Worker-->

Techs, Mining-->Bronze Working-->Hunting-->AH-->Mysticism-->IW

Turn 3 and a very early friend!

Never guess what I’m thinking! RUSH RUSH RUSH!!!

Turn 6 and I can see his borders! He’ll be boxed in by me anyway I think so may not need the rush. Meanwhile, Mehmed has found me… tight map!

Annoyingly I find no decent Bronze or Horse near me, and its too long to wait for IW this early so a rush doesn’t look too likely. However, I see a horse just outside Musa’s borders so I’m very tempted to quickly put a city down there, which I hope will block him in whilst depriving him of an important resource. Got a warrior checking that he can’t get out of that corner of land though as it seems he might have a connection to his south.

Bummer, Musa can escape! Nevertheless, I shall try to pillage him and take him later with catapults!

I found my second city to block Musa and take the horses too :) Second worker built and going to hook that horse up!

IW finishes and we’ve gone Iron :D Even better its already mined and roaded! Out come the Swords… lets see what we can do!

I found Tokyo for some nice early whipping…

And here we are at the end of the turnset (1475BC cus I overran a turn by mistake). Just considering now whether I want to steal workers from Musa, as he’s got two on the horses that his culture has stolen for him!

Spoiler :

I am referring to the AI that is close to the right, I just saw green and assumed Jao hehe

Had a go on the standard map, running 3.19. Details are below.
Spoiler :
EC1: Tokugawa, 4000 BC – 1500 BC
Research list: hunting, AH, mining, BW, mysticism, sailing
Settled in place and began with a workboat. Due to Mansa’s proximity I went settler before worker. With Mehmed & Kublai as well the whole thing is starting to look like a techer extravaganza. Mehmed is already starting to eat up the land to the SE, but I’ve set up a city near his borders, and hopefully I’ll be able to claim my share of the area.
At 1500 BC: 3 cities, 3 warriors, 2 workers

I will play my round on Sat. I do think we will need to make a decision on the patch front. We cant do 3.17 and 3.19. I might need to World builder the saves.

For the record I am an Immortal player with some deity games under my belt. Happily enough I am also used to epic speed, so that makes it even better :goodjob:

till 1500 BC

Spoiler :

Endlook. got Mining/BW/pottery/Writing/mys/agri/AH/hunting. 7 warriors, 2 workers, 1 settler, 3 cities. Blocked Mansa, Choked Mehmed.

Gamedevelopment:

Scouted a bit around, noticed Mehmed and Mansa very close. Mansa is docile as it can get, so I decided to cut him off, and choke Mehmed.

Toka's weakness is early start, however a succesfull early game leading to mid can make him a potential powerhouse. 2x seafood definitely helps with this, also hill start yummie..

BO was WB (with some micro pop2 same turn as WB pops)/worker/settler/warriors + WB + barracks (with chopping) till pop 5/settler/2x warrior/settler.

Mining/BW/pottery/Writing/mys/agri/AH/hunting/Aest (can be alphabet for personal preferences 1th turn researching at 1500 BC)

Got lucky! Tasty worker

I keep my woodsman/Combat I on a hill-forest near Mehmed to choke him, everytime a settler tries to come out I move towards him so the settler moves back.

1th settler at chokepoint near Mansa.
granary- whip monument at pop2 - finish granary - library

Rest of warriors to prevent barb spawning

3th city near Mehmed to make the choke complete and make an easy logistics route to kill him when I settle the fourth city next to the bronze. (ah will finish then, pasture pigs, whip monument. Means culture pop in 22 turns. Might consider placing city next to bronze to kill Mehmed earlier.

Screenshots at 1800 BC

Woodsman II, Combat I warrior still choking Mehmed

overview of 3 cities + land + possible city spots

Pro's of this save, Weak Mansa/mehmed. Much land to settle/conquer. Good solid start with Toku/solid cities.

Con other civs might get big with no or little resistance to the south and possible econ failure to get land to the south. Possible to grab some land first and just peacefully fill land in later while choking mehmed instead of conquering him

Screenshots at 1500 BC

Mehmed managed to sneak 1 city in (sigh, 1 warrior aint enough for choking apparently and civ settled in place this time instead of going back with settler. Still got semichoke.

3th settler going to Bronze spot, for quicker axeman. Mehmed build stonehenge! Basically making him 10x tastier target then he already was.

overview of land + cities. block city almost pops 4 with library, good infra.

Set sliders to zero, for minmax research. +16 with 3 cities is good!

edit: crap thought save-limit was 1800 BC, will play till 1500 now :)
edit2: Fixed

Just for interest, here is my attempt. It's not eligible since its a 3.19 save and I reloaded a few times.
Spoiler :
I couldn't resist the stone site and building the pyramids. Also, I'm a sucker for canal cities. Having now seen some of the other saves, I think the decision to expand south before north is justified. It should be relatively easy to pick up the barb city and also found a city to get the copper.

I'm an Emperor player, but prefer builder-style. Here's my attempt at not-builder-style:

Spoiler :
Moved warrior NE. Not gaining anything by moving so settled in place.
Worked Hill (2 hammers) to get WB out fastest.
Tech: Mining-BW

3900 Discovered LOLROFL GP farm to the NE. 4 food resources in the BFC!

Completed WB, begin worker to time with completion of BW.

3175 complete Worker, begin worker (chopped). Then it's a workboat and chops towards a settler.

Tech Hunt-AH. My warrior has been hanging around Mehmood looking for a worker to steal, but there's not any tasty tiles in sight, so I send him off to explore further.

2600 Complete AH. Begin Writing

2550 Complete WB, build warrior while I grow to size 3 for the settler (fish, fish, minePH)

2300 Unlucky! lose a warrior on a hill to a Barb warrior. This was to be defence for the Copper city so I'll be a tiny bit delayed while I get another one out.

2275 complete settler, begin barracks. I switch to Slavery now too.

2250 Found Osaka next to Copper. This city will just work the copper and not grow, until the borders pop, which may be quite a while!

2175 complete Writing begin Alpha. Lose my exploring Warrior to a Barb archer.

2075 Hook up Copper. 3 turns until both cities complete Barracks and I'll start pumping Axes (including Whipping).

1850 Get Open Borders with Mehmood so I can scout around his land.

1500BC
9 axemen will be on Mehmood borders in 3 turns.
2 cities
4 population
Have teched BW and writing and 412/702 Alpha (29 turns to Alpha)
Will have Ivory in 4 turns.

Is anyone else likely to play this? I will have to worldbuilder the save to make 3.17 work. I still have many games i need to complete on 3.17. Grrr!!!

So much to do so little time.:lol:

I would advice loading lots of pics if you cant view 3.17 or 3.19 due to patching,

Okay used 3.17 to 1500bc.

Spoiler :

I wanted to see how i would cope without teching the basic techs and tech towards alphabet. Big mistake as i over expanded.

I went 1N for extra production on hill.

I sent out my warrior exploring and found Mehed. I managed to find his worker and stole him. The worker made it back to base before his warrior escort. My warrior returned to Mehed capital and a mehed archer died attacking it on the forest outside his cap. After peace was made a barb archer killed it. This win allowed peace.

In terms of techs. Went pottery, writing, mining, BW, alpabet. I have built granary and library in capital. The library was whipped.

4 cities, 3 workers and 9 turns off alphabet to trade to all AI. So i should catch up most of the basic techs.

I suspect there will be better saves but I had fun.

4 cities but GP farm one was built too early.

Mehed still at 2 cities.

Over view.

We'll start the voting tomorrow. I will need to group up the saves to view and vote on.

Sorry about map mess up at start people. In terms of 3.17 and 3.19 I am informed this can be edited in World builder. Either that or we upgrade to 3.19. ;)

We will go ahead and vote for 2-3 days. Hopefully finish by Thursday. Its not always about voting for the best save but the save that will be most interesting or challenging to play.

Please rank your top 3 in order.

First place 3 points.
Second place 2 points
Third place. 1 point.

PLEASE NOTE!! You cant vote for your own save. I am happy for anyone below to vote.

King Morgan V3.17

Inso

Jumbled

Fluxx

PNP Dredd

Gumbolt 3.17

RJM - He did reload a few times. So that rules this out.

miked1991 - Didnt post a save. Shame!! I am happy for him to still post a save at 3.19 to be voted on.

As ignorant teacher played Marathan this is out of the vote.

Please remember to relabel your saves. This is something I was guilty of too. :(

1) I would vote on dredd's save, since I can not vote on my own :).
2) King Morgan
3) Gumbolt

Pretty much like the opportunity to just steamroll Mehmed with dredds save, though there is no block on mansa sadly enough.

I vote 1) fluxx 2) gumbolt.

Spoiler :
Mainly because fluxx has been exploiting Mehmed more. But I do like gumbolt's tech rate.

I've moved to 3.19 now - I think most people will over the next weeks due to the release of BUFFY.

I'd vote 1) Fluxx 2) dredd 3) Gumbolt

All three look like promising starts. I should mention too that I'm coming into the cookbook as a Monarch player looking to move up to Emperor, so I'm glad we've got some strong players stepping in.

Theres no real need for spoilers here. You should vote for a third save as this give points to another player.

I didnt like my save much. 4th city was poorly placed and will not get a border pop for ages. I am heavily relying on alphabet!!

I will be doing SGOTM 10 so i will be updating or doing a duel build if i can figure that out. ;)

Hi guys,

lurking this one :) ...
@Fluxx: I don't get Tokyo position... why did you avoid grass cows, or banana? The best food tile you got here gives +1 until biology :(. Also , farming the spice first would have been even better :)

Cheers,
Raskolnikov

I founded Tokyo before Mehmed founded his city, basically AI bad placement, but we can always raze his city.
Tokyo aint badly placed, when border pops, we can farm the floodplains, and the spice at calendar will provide the city plenty of food before the rennaissance.
The reason I rather placed Tokyo was out of a blocking perspective. If I managed to place the next city 2w of Mehmed's 2nd city, and my 5th city next to the grass cow, we would have had a 100% block, after which we can just peacefully expand and kill him later.

About the cottage instead of farm. I got a rule of thumb for myself
to cottage all calendar resources except for banana's which I will farm.
I think alot of people do it, however not sure if it is always the best approach.

Tx for your explanation :). The stuff is that farming the spice gives you better yield at pop 1... My point was it's better to improve the spice first than the grassland. I try to get as close as the final food yield generally (thus I generally farm wine, sugar, banana, and spice when irrigated)... I guess one should adjust taking into account the purpose of the city...

back to lurking!

Cheers
