I am too good for the level before Emperor, and end up leading all game( that's very boring), but at Emperor I do awful. I even use the editor so I have excellent terrain but fall way behind in science and cities. I turn the science to 100%, but after a while I need to take it down to 80%. Why is Emperor level so hard? Does the AI have a huge advantage or something?
How can I do better than it? I expand extremely quickly. With my first city I build a spearmen, then settler, spearmen to go to the new city. Then settler, spearmen to the new city, etc. I do this for all cities untill I have no land left to use. Am I doing something wrong?
Btw I am looking to become average at this level.

ya to many spearmen for the strat your using. units = happiness up to the first 2 units. If your in a research mode go for warriors instead of spearmen. But even then i dont think i would slow down settlers for 2 warriors per a city. 1 perhaps~ I usually cut it thinner then that depending on the circumstances.

Also try to find which cities can make settlers the fastest and just put those on settler duty leaving the not so fast growing cities for your warriors if you need any.

But systematicaly making spearmen at the start is to costly.

If your planning to war then thats a different story.

If your having trouble with the AI warring you i recommend you try some starts with no army. I found that extremely instructional. Learn to appease the AI if you dont want to fight the AI.

Well I get 1 spearman per city. Basically a city builds a settler, then a spearman to go with the settler, so that when the city grows to pop 2, it doesn't go into civil disorder. Maybe I should mix spears and warriors, I guess if I make warriors early I will be expanding much faster. About appeasing the AI-I have always been peaceful, last game I was most powerful for a while, but gave in to every demand :p
This game I am looking to go to war and not give in to demands though.

I have the same problem, but one step up. When I was playing Vanilla Civ3 I kicked ass at emperor level, but then suck up the joint at Diety.
I was really hoping that C3C would help me out with its Demi-God level, but I tried it the other day and got steam-rollered.
The problem, I've found is that the other Civs trade Techs too much. I can't keep up with there regular science output, and once they start to trade everything they leave me in the dust. Also, even if I am around the same Tech level as them, they NEVER trade with me. What is up with that? You think you are better than me Joan?

I had that problem in Civ3 vanilla, but i found a way out, aim for a wonder(aim for the Great Library), as soon a you get a tech trade it with every civ for gold, use that gold for your reseach, if you get republic don't trade it, wait for the AI to cahnge to monarch and then trade it. NEVER trade anything to another civ for gold in between turns, NEVER!!! they will trade it between each other. If a civ asks you to trade a tech for another tech do it, and when it is almost your turn again, when you are taking a tour in across empire checking how are your cities doing (remenber it is still not your turn) click in the diplomacy button, pick a civ and trade what the other civ gave you, you'll notice that what ever the Ai traded with you this civ will not have it (usually it is a contact with a new civ that they trade with you)as soon as you finish the deal (do it even if the deal is a bargain is better than nothing ) the option to click "goog bye" appears, here don't click there place thet mouse in the diplimacy button hit enter and click the diplomacy button pick another civ and do the same. The game is in turns meanig that civ D is #4 and you are #6 so it is probable that Civ A,B,C and E already traded with Civ D but it if possible that Civ G or H haven't. IF you happen to be a non-expansinits civ trade world maps with every civ you can, start from the sorriest civ up, if you happen to come across a new civ trade world maps, after a while you will have a big map, if you come across a new civ trade world map and wacth their entire gold be your.

another thing have found interesting is that in diety every time i get a tech now there is 3 options to research if i research one when i am finish the other 2 tech will be given to all the civ for free at their respective turns.
