I played this interesting map, which I think is great for learners and shadow games. I called it Engineering Izzy because I wanted to try an engineering rush, but it in fact lends itself to many different strategies. Disclaimer: I posted a screen from this game in the frustrated with immortal thread, but it's spoilered now, so unless you have a photographic memory, you won't get an unfair advantage.

And the start:

The save is attached. It runs on the latest version of BUFFY (3.19.005).

Edit: I also added a WB save. Don't forget to add the barb techs!

That's quite a starting location!

I may give this a go. I've never played Izzy

Settle on corn? :smoke: If you didn't start with fishing I guess settling on stone would be obvious. 1N maybe, but not even extra coin. I'm pretty sure I wouldn't SIP.

Well, lots of useless coastal tiles and no extra penny, but I'm sure it's still fine. Unless you mean 1W which might be more interesting! Oasis makes improving clam less necessary.

I actually went on the coastal gold, but when I looked at the start again, 1W suddenly looked very attractive. It gets you more FPs. The irony is that I had city 2 work the clam for almost the entirety of the game so there was no point in settling where I did.

I’d still settle on the stone. Three hammer city centre tile is just too delicious. Also:
- Auto-connecting the stone for almost guaranteed spiritual pyramids fun (if desired) is nice.
- Leaving the PH 2N1W of the settler open for a city down the line is appealing because it makes it easier to share the lovely tiles you can already see. You can’t do that with 1W because it stops you settling north and also looks higher risk of orphaning seafood.

I accept that 1W would likely be better medium to long term but settling on the stone should be enough to guarantee that the game doesn’t last that long!

Agreed that improving the clam is not a priority for a long while given the oasis corn and gold and need to get settlers out to grab some quality city spots. Putting hammers into a work boat looks likely to slow down early expansion so losing coastal access isn’t a big issue.

Yes, I stared at the screen a bit more last night and I'd go on the stone for sure. 3:hammers:cc too stronk and clams suck.

Settling 1W on gold gives you 5FPs, that's a lot to give up for +1hpt.

PH 2N1W indeed makes for a juicy size 5 city: work Clams, 1 farmed FP, 3 gold hills.

Settle on Stone is the obvious powerplay, but although we're Expansive, I hate having neither Fresh Water nor open water access (harbor) for the capital.
I'd send the warrior to the hill 2S of the settler and reasses then: I'd be very tempted to settle there if there's another ressource available.

Could someone post a worldbuilder save?

Is it just a matter of opening it in WB and then saving it there?

2S doesn’t look great to me. Turn 2 settle because the oasis costs two movement. The corn is improved a turn later than the stone settle because it’s second ring and you miss one gold and the clam, which could still be worked once netted by a WB from another city (albeit without the lighthouse bonus.)

I’m also triggered slightly by settling in from the coast and not having fresh water can be annoying. However, they’re minor considerations compared with the super fast start you get from the stone. They’re also likely to be even less important here given the title of the thread. This looks to be a Pangea so the game should be winnable well before the industrial era and health being a real issue. You should also meet everyone and therefore be able to trade for a few health resources if in a pinch.

Yeah extra :hammers:cc compensate for a LOT. 2nd city can work the fps. I don't think bureaucracy is a big deal if the map is fast and you can always move the capital.

edit. and with EXP no fresh water is close to irrelevant on pangaea. No lighthouse is a much smaller issue than many think.

Trading with the heretics? What kind of nonsense is that! :nono:

Anyway, as I said, settling on Stone is almost guaranteed to be the best move by far.
But I would be looking for a reason not to. :p
And if the southern PH unlocked an extra ressource, that would be reason enough - for me. But just to be 100% clear, I'm not claiming it would be the superior play. Just a play *I* would favour. :)
Hey, there's a reason I'm not a Deity player!
