Can someone give me tips on how to start out/play with England?
What techs should I be beelineing, what social policy?
Please ! I am going to start a match tonight!

If it's a water-map: rush for National College and then Navigation. Secure Iron supply. Win the game with your unstoppable Ship of the Line deathfleet.

Seriously, once you have a handful of Logistics SotL, it's game over on Immortal unless there is a run away who's capital isn't accessible by sea.

Bronzeworking (for barracks) + Compass (for galleases) before Education/Navigation on a water map. You can train your galleases before upgrading them into Ships of the Line.

To put it in really simple terms, you have a great ranged unit in the longbowman and a great naval unit. A decent set of 5 or so longbowmen can happily take down enemy cities from a distance. The ships likewise. So initially focus on getting a strong core empire, decent tech, decent income, meanwhile build up a reasonable defesive army. Then wait for an AI to DOW you and start to deprive them of their cities. Rinse and repeat!

I play England like its an armed camp. Make sure you know where the iron is and can get some in time for the SoL. Use all the other ships too, like privateers and capture frigates from the enemy, dont sink them down, thats a waste.

I've been playing a lot of continent-based deity games as the English recently, and the key points are:
  • Strong tradition 4 cities opening (pretty much as per Tabarnak's excellent guide with the proviso to ignore the bottom half of the tech tree for now in favor of the next point)
  • Beeline Astronomy and build at least one Caravel (discover other continent and look for tasty coastal capitals)
  • Now grab IW + metal casting
  • Use spies to fill in up to machinery and steel while grabbing another city location with iron, or conquering one with CBs/swordmen if you can
  • Grab navigation while bulding galleases in cities with armories
  • Send fleet of double upgraded SoTLs to take tasty capitals (you will get range very very quickly, I tend to find you need at least 6 SOTLs in order to rotate out the wounded early on, but then you can split them into two fleets with a privateer each)
  • WIN!

It's not perfect, I would say I win maybe 65% of games, mostly a mix of domination/science victories, but it's incredibly fun, there's always something to do, and you don't feel like you're simply a cheesing a big water map. England do have two excellent UUs, and they should both be used imo. The capital-grabbing tactic works really well, your first target will almost certainly have the GLighthouse, which is like a free upgrade to your fleet!

Have to agree with most of the above really.

Iron is essential, as you come up to finish IW in the tech tree, be ready to send out a settler to sit on a decent chunk of iron if you have none in the capital, or ally a CS and pay to upgrade the resource.

Build up a decent fleet of SotL's. I like to have 2 "navies" of 4, each with their own Privateer. If I'm going across continents I'll often either take a coastal town, or found one as my "beach head" to land my longbows and melee units to take internal cities. Longbows are excellent, and they upgrade into gatlin/machine guns that have a proper range.

When played properly, England is a very strong domination civ.
