EDGE#159 Why does it have to be this way?

So what do we have here? Well, we play as Venice on small sized Fractal map with standard speed and QC and QM are turned on as usual. This time I present a game for everybody to play along with me and report back 50 or 100 turns at a time. I have a head start because I have played some 50 turns and I have made some interesting observations. First of all, the map is absolutely great... but for any other civ than Venice! In fact I assume that we all have to work a little bit harder for our meal. Secondly, SIP is out of the question! The reason for this is found in the water tiles at the starting location. And thirdly, you can get a nice NW within your borders by moving a little bit. But the challenge is to combine this all into a functioning game plan! And rarely have I ever wanted so badly to be forward settled by the AI! Let´s see what comes out of all this, but at least you will get a few surprises. ;)

Venice. Deity. Don't settle in place. Sounds like a tough one but I'll give it a try.

    Spoiler :
I totally moved the settler the wrong way and took until T6 to settle.

BO: Scout, Monument, Shrine, Worker, Granary, Archer, Library
Tech path: Pottery, Mining, Archery, AH, Writing, Sailing, The Wheel.

    • T0. Warrior moves South, sees what looks like coast. Settler follows that way, moving away from YASS!
    • T1. Ouch, moving again; away from a 3-lux start!
    • T2. There's Sri Pada, but not in range of the coast my settler is heading toward. Settler turns east.
    • T4. Oh, another coast over here.
    • T5. Have 3 ruins in sight, a NW and no city.
    • T6. Settle Venice between Wheat and Salt for a YASS start after a wide detour. Oh wow, when you settle next to a ruin, it pops the ruin. And I got +1 population so my capital starts at 2 pop, that makes up for it. Start Scout.
    • T8. Spear upgrade from ruin.
    • T10. Take out Barb camp with Spear.
    • T11. Scout finishes, start Monument.
    • T14. Discover Pottery > Mining. Look at all the nice city locations I could settle.
    • T17. Monument finishes, start Shrine.
    • T21. Discover Mining > Archery.
    • T22. Shrine finishes, start worker. Ruin > Barb camps, darn no faith.
    • T23. Meet Kuala Lampur, and oh, FoY will be in its borders. Here's my second city!
    • T24. Scout kills Barb archer.
    • T27. Archery finishes > AH.
    • T32. Worker finishes, start Granary.
    • T37. Venice Pop 4.
    • T40. Granary finishes, start Archer.
    • T42. Writing finishes > Sailing.
    • T43. Clear Barb camp for Kuala Lampur, now friends.
    • T44. Archer finishes, start Library.
    • T46. Landed Elite.
    • T47. Venice Pop 5. buy Sri Pada, should've done that a while ago.
    • T48. Pantheon. Take a chance and go Fertility Rights. Earth Mother is only +3 faith and OWN +4 since we're Venice.
    • T50. Discover Sailing > The Wheel.

Thank you @Nizef for this very challenging and fun map! Here is my midgame report, it goes to t125 which was a natural stopping point.

    Spoiler :

Based on Nizef's revelation of the nearby NW, I was determined not to settle til I found it. It took me til t7 to settle Venice in the clearly prime location.

    venice7.jpg

Went first for Worker + Mining, hoping to find an AI and war/peace them, and sell my first Salt for the gold to buy Sri Pada. I got nice early ruins: Culture, Spearman, Barbs, Culture again, Archery tech. Opened Tradition, then switched to Honor, left side first. This was my plan going into the game, I wanted to be aggressive and earn/buy many Generals to claim territory with.

Soon found Kuala Lumpur & their Fountain of Youth. I warred them, stole 2 Workers, and prepared to conquer them. I did not rush Optics or even Sailing. After discovering horses in the capital, I decided to go for Wheel and get Chariots. I also decided that since I got the Spearman ruin & free Archery, I would beeline Construction and attempt Terracotta Army for 5 free units. But, I was beaten to it.

Build: Worker, Archer, Scout, Monument, Chariot x3, Archer, Granary, Shrine, Library…
Tech: Mining, (Archery) => Wheel => Construction => Writing => Optics => Philosophy

Askia sailed a Trireme to me t55, I DOWed immediately and made peace 5 turns later to sell Salt to fund 2 Composite upgrades. I took Kuala Lumpur t67 with 3 Chariots, 2 CB’s, a Medic Spearman, & Cover Warrior.

Carthage found me t68, DOWed her too. This revealed to me 2 CS she had allied. But I couldn’t get anything from her after 5 turns, so I made white peace and began regular trades. She is one of those AIs who tends to like/respect you more if you attack her early.

Used a Citadel to claim extra Horses and Ivory for capital. Founded religion t60 with Tithe & Religious Community, later enhanced with Hermitage & cheaper Prophets. Researched Optics t82, and I actually planted a Customs House

I sailed my modest army (limited by Supply) to the Songhai continent and began the next war. He had rushed Philosophy for Oracle and only had Archers & Warriors to defend with, even past t100. I was able to take Gao t118 once my Chariots got Logistics, but first I had to chop a sightline for them. The FoY promotion + Medic II were helpful throughout.

Gao came with a Market + Macchu Picchu for a fast Merchant, and Stonehenge. I planted another Citadel to grab Horses & Citrus. In the Congress, I proposed Scholars in Residence given the struggles I will have with Science. Carthage offered friendship and we signed an RA immediately. Morocco followed, but neither of us had Education yet.

I had a lot of gold from plundering trade routes (2 caravans, 2 ships) and exporting all my resources. I spent it on allying a couple CS: Mogadishu, which put out an investment quest and provided invaluable food to the puppets, then Prague as I entered Medieval to double the empire’s culture.

On t125 I capture Tombouctu, wiping out Askia. This city comes with the Great Lighthouse. Now I have 2 cities to launch Caravans & Cargo ships from, and they will both get city connections. As Venice, I haven’t built a single trade unit yet due to lack of routes!

I’m not sure what direction to take the game. I think I will try to conquer wonder-laden Thebes eventually, but go for Diplo victory over Domination. Since I conquered Kuala Lumpur, I believe I can ultimately sell it to England or Carthage to have them liberate the CS, allowing me to purchase its vote. I have 3 Chariots with Logistics & March but no further promotions, so they will make excellent Mounted units, especially with the FoY bonus. They still stand a chance to earn Shock II => Charge/Mobility by game’s end if I keep them busy. I will stay at war with Songhai’s former ally Sofia to finish earning the next General and perhaps train up some Great Galleasses.

    Edge 159 Venice T125

Not much to tell, Venice is interesting to play sometimes and since we're isolated there are no wars or anything so a lot of sim city. Almost the complete opposite game from @Mizzenmast

I can't really tell how good or bad I'm doing but its been nice and relaxing.

    Notes of interest:
    Spoiler :

T65. My gamble of not taking a faith based pantheon didn't pay off, the last religion goes. I imagine I will keep Fertility Rights for quite awhile though since no one is near me. That will allow me to grow a big capital. Especially since...
    T82. Built Hanging Gardens.
    T104 or something. NC finished.

    At T125:
    • Venice is Pop 17 thanks to HG and FR.
    • I have 64 Sci, 38 cpt, 65 gpt, 8 fpt, 2 tourism.
    • I only have one puppeted CS, Bucharest, which is not that good of a city but I wanted to keep Kuala Lampur a CS since I'm allied and am getting culture from it. My second GMerch is out and heading toward Samarkand, a kind of nice city.
    • Edit. Fun fact: I don't even have Construction yet. I don't think I've ever gone this long without researching it. But I don't need the CB's this game and I needed to get to Astronomy because everyone is out of reach of TR's.

@Nizef have you finished up to T125ish?

All right here is a very short recap of my Venice game, until t138. I had to stop there for RL things, thus the "funny" turn report.

I happened to move in the right direction and founded Venice on t2. I went for a religion and got 3rd pick with Earth Mother/Tithe/Pagodas/Religious Community and Itinerant Preachers. Dido came with a settler very early and I conquered Hippo Regius already on t55 with Archers. NC built on t73. Then I bought Kuala Lumpur roughly on t75 for the happiness. Askia came with a settler and (like a spider with its web) I waited for him to settle. Then I attacked soon enough and had to churn through more or less his whole army right outside Venice. I got Taghaza on t109 and continued directly to Gao, which fell around t120.

So here I am at a crossroads. I am 6 techs behind Egypt but still it feels okay. I am also first in crop yields and third in pop, so basically I am doing fine. However, I have this uneasy feeling of doom and gloom hanging over my game. I can´t pinpoint it, it just feels that way.

Looks like an excellent setup to me @Nizef, the AIs managed to put all their forward-settles in nice spots for you.

    My update to 200

    Spoiler :

I went for full Commerce, left side first, after Honor. The Songhai puppets built Caravansaries and I wanted to be able to freely DOW the AIs on the other continent, so I built 10 Caravans and sent all but 2 to Carthage for gold and science. Allied the rest of the cultural & maritime CS first. Spied continuously on Egypt with 1 death. I did get into 1-2 wars with each of the overseas AIs, to stop them receiving Friend bonuses from my CS allies (EUI shows this info) and prevent buy-outs. For the most part these wars resulted in nice peace deals; Morocco who was doing badly even gave me a city. However, Egypt did conquer one of my allies (Cape Town) before I could peace him.

The highlight of this round was getting incredibly lucky with religion. In the Medieval I stole a used Egyptian Prophet which let me buy Pagodas, Mosques, and Universities in the Songhai puppets & Kuala. Then in the Renaissance I stole a used English Prophet with Monasteries/Cathedrals/Sacred Sites! So I was able to get all 4 buildings in my satellites, plus Universities, plus some Tourism for the time being. Mostly I was thankful for the buildings’ local culture boosted by Tradition opener, since even Venice cannot buy tiles in puppets. I also favored culture in Venice, prioritizing the super-Hermitage and working all my guilds once it was up.

In the Congress, I passed Scholars & Natural Heritage Sites, then proposed to embargo Egypt, mainly to prevent the other proposer, England, from embargoing me. (I suspect that’s a rule, but I’m not 100% sure. She proposed WF regardless which I will vote against.)

Researched Industrialization t198, was able to buy 3 Coal from Egypt immediately and bought Factories. Next turn my first Artist age ended, I bulbed my Writer, and took 4 policies: Autocracy as the first Ideology with Futurism, Espionage, and Nationalism, plus the Aesthetics opener. Trying for Big Ben now.

I did my best to maintain relations with Carthage but she declined to renew friendship and looked ready to attack me. I had to distract her with bribes to get a DoF again and resume intensive borrowing, only for her to denounce/backstab me t200. If she wars me and kills all my Caravans, it won’t bankrupt me since I am also deeply in debt to her. But I would like to delay our rift until I have Mobilization/Big Ben in place to cheaply buy a defensive army/navy.

On 201, Egypt & England have jointly DOWed me, and they will surely conquer more of my CS allies. But I plan to dominate them both in the last third of the game and I will hopefully get the harder-to-reach CS in peace offerings to liberate.

Here is my short report from t250 in the Venice game.

Egypt gobbled up all the midgame wonders except for PorcelainT, which Ramesses mercyfully let me have. Obviously I had no Coal and had to wait for Morocco to get it online on t201. I immidiately bought three factories and was first to choose an ideology. I went Freedom, Egypt chose Authocracy, Carthage and Morocco opted for Order. England is taking a bad beating and is not yet so far and Dido put Askia out of his misery. Egypt is still first in tech but I am only one tech behind and Morocco is 2 off the pace. After getting the first wonder I have built Big Ben, Eiffel, Broadway and SoL. I have spent enormous sums on wrestling the CS into my sphere. Still no clue on how to win, DipV, DomV or SV are all still possible. Culture is off the table since Egypt is too strong. I am first in pop and third in crops (but really only slightly behind).

Finally finished the Venice game. Egypt had a blast of a game and I should have dealt with them much earlier. They had crazy influence with some of the CSs, like 519 points on Cape town and 450-500 on a couple of others as well. At the end I decided to build a space ship instead and won a SV on t332. My late game science was decent peaking at 1190. However, it is so weird when the expands might work scientist slots once in a while but then just change it for no aparent reason. Ramesses took out England and everybody hated me for my Freedom ideology. I was also taking quite a happiness pressure hit: 41 unhappiness from differing ideologies. I had to keep CS allies just for happiness purpose and I even got 3 points in Commerce to get some extra happiness. At the end I was some 5-6 techs ahead of the field. Anyway, this was crazy and definitely not too easy.

I'm still playing Venice - at T250 so figured I'd post. It took a while, but my island is now inhabited by every AI in the game but England. I think I will actually finish this game, my first single player game finished in a long time if I do. And I realized that I don't like Civ 5 combat; or at least I don't like dealing with moving all those units. I prefer the stack of doom. That is a main reason I don't finish games. Playing Venice in an isolated location has been awesome. I'm rich, first in science, and have almost all the CS as allies. There has not been one war yet - between anyone. But all the other AI hate Elizabeth now so there may be one soon.

    A few highlights:
    Spoiler :

T169. Venice adopts a religion. Lost Fertility Rights but buy a Pagoda and have happiness from Garden now.
T173. Enter Industrial and purchase PS173.
T193. First to Ideology; choose Freedom.
    T229. Purchase RLs.
T234. Had to vote against my own proposal of International Games because I'm building Statue of Liberty.
T237. Arrrggghh, Ahmad builds SoL - and I only had 1 turn left! I swear that happens so often I think the AI can detect it and hurry their wonder along. Cheaters.

Edit. I went full Tradtion, two in Patronage, have finished Rationalism, opened Exploration and Asthetics and have 5 tenets in Freedom. My culture has been great this game, I have even won the CS quests for must culture a few times. Not really sure what I'm doing differently except I guess my puppets are building culture buildings and I have the money to ally the culture CS (and there are a lot in this game)

Finished the Venice game. T332 Diplo Victory on the third WL vote. I thought I had it on the first vote but a few turns before the vote, Dido wiped out Askia and I lost his Diplomat votes so I was just short of the number needed. Then Dido and Ramses joint DoW'd me so I lost most of my trade routes and was in the negative gpt some turns until I could reestablish some safe routes.

Dido had the biggest army in the world by far so I had to quickly start building and buying units. Luckily I had like 10K stockpiled and I was ahead of them in tech or I might have been in trouble; I had Battleships and they were still fighting with Frigates in the beginning of the war. The early game was so peaceful but then after ideologies the world was plunged into chaos. It was fun; I do like sea combat and that's what this mostly was since I was on my own island and my CS puppets were spread out in coastal locations.

    Here’s some highlights.
    Spoiler :

    • T251. Double aarrrggghhh, Ahmad builds Christo Redentor. Again, I had just one turn left!
    • T262. Only get the first level of International Games. Realized that with Venice you don’t want IG to pass much less propose it yourself.
    • T263. Dido and Ramses joint DoW Askia.
    • T266. Finish Hubble with GE.
    • T278. World Ideology Freedom passes. Move Diplomats to Capitals in preparation for the first World Leader vote.
    • T280. Oh no, Dido captured Gao and my diplomat fled.
    • T282. Oh boy, Dido just wiped out Askia and both her and Ramses joint DoW me. Not going to win on the first vote. (At some point I recall Askia to life but don't remember when).
    • T285. Build Sydney Opera House.
    • T300. WL vote in 10 turns. Make peace with Ramses; Dido refuses peace.
    • T304. Dido captures my CS of Sophia.
    • T305. Liz and Askia joint DoW Dido, yes!
    • T306. Liz captures Florence from Dido but keeps it.
    • T307. Ramses Dow Liz. The drumbeat of war is heard all over the world, only Ahmad has stayed out of it. Dido has had 5 nukes just sitting in a city in range of Vencie for a while now.
    • T312. Dido captures another CS, Kyzyl.
    • T315. With the help of Venetian troops, Kuala Lumpur captures and puppets the Carthaginian city of Lilybaeum. I can now see 10 Carthaginian A-bombs around my lands, what is she waiting for?
    • T330. Take a Carthaginian city on her home continent and she agrees to peace and even gives me Truffles.
    • T331. Dump all my money into CS to hopefully prevent one of them from flipping next turn.
    • T332. We win the WL vote and victory!

EDGE#160: This is the way games should start

Where should I start? Well, with the start perhaps. Our starting position is on a hill, riverside and next to a mountain. Obviously we have some Salt and Silver to work as well. Do I need to say more? Well Venice is our neighbour and most things you need will be found nearby. Anyway, here we play as the Iroquois on a small unmodded Pangaea map with quick speed. QC and QM are turned on as usual. I opted for an uncomplicated 4 city empire but based on the number of luxuries you could try five or even six cities. It has been a long time since Hiawatha was present in this series and here you will have one of the easiest tasks possible with this civ. I built some nice wonders and I hope you will be able to do it as well. Genghis to the north is a little restless and needs a sparring partner but your lands are fairly easy to defend. Try it out and you will get a positive (finally?) experience with this rather lowly rated civ. Enjoy!

I played according to HoF rules and also submitted my win. There is a short recap of my game behind the spoiler.

    Spoiler :

SIP of course. What else? 4 city Tradition start with ToA and Oracle before NC and Hagia Sofia afterwards. Genghis come to visit very early with some Warriors and Archers and he seemed surprised when I destructed his entire army in five turns or so. 3rd religion with EM/Tithe/Pagodas/RC/IP and later on Charible Missions as a reformation belief. Smooth start indeed!

The midgame was okay. I built Sistine and Louvre and even GMoD. However I lost out on LToP and Globe. Still a CV was on the board. Genghis came to visit a second time, now with Keshiks. However, my XBs and a few Musketmen once again demolished his army. I went Freedom while the Incas (unfortunately) and England went Authocracy. Being the good communist he is, Washington once again went Order and so did Enrico. The rest of the world had had enough of Genghis and took him out before he got to choose an ideology.

I was first to Modern and rushed Eiffel and continued by building Redentor, SoL and Neuschwanstein. I had a struggle for happiness after ideologies and eventually took -40 in ideology pressure but I barely remained in the green. Then I had to decide how to end the game. After winning so many games with a CV, I wanted to do something different and built a spaceship instead. Combined with my policy choices this was probably not optimal but it was still fun. Right at the end I got tired of Enricos Profets and conquered Venice.

SP: full Tradition, full Piety, Aesthetics opener, Exploration opener, full Rationalism and Freedom 7.

EDGE#161: A, A and A and some other issues (DomV challenge)

Here comes another play along game. I noticed that we haven´t had a plain war game for a long time and thus this had to be corrected. This time we play as the Zulus on a Pangaea map with standard speed and size. I have played some 70 turns so I have a good understanding of what the game offers. We have ended up in a neighbourhood that is somewhat hostile, or what do you think of playing against Alexander, Augustus and Attila? The start is nice and there are enough luxuries to go for a more peaceful start if you like that better. Anyway the aim is clear: DomV. Enjoy!

Oh good, another play along game. I'm not sure I've ever actually finished a Zulu Dom game and that's a shame, I'll give it a shot. I'm going to settle on the Gold. I love settling on luxes and it keeps the Salt in range and puts me in range of the mountain for a boost from Neuschwanstein, one of the few wonders I can reliably get on Deity.

Hello, after much delay I have finished the Venice game with a 288 Dom victory.

I built Big Ben, spawned a couple Merchants from puppets, and tributed ~80gpt each from England and Morocco to fund a big Autocracy army. I had to go way beyond Supply (about double) around 250, suffering 70% production loss for ~20 turns while I started taking cities. I adopted Clausewitz, captured Marrakech 262, Carthage 263, London 280, and Thebes 288.

Zulu game T50. I think I might need to start over. It feels like I'm already too far behind. Its T50 and I only have one expo that I just founded on T45. And no settler in progress. I did get some good ruins so I hesitate to restart. Two Pop ruins and I only have one settler out at T50, how'd I do that bad? I stole a Greek worker on T8 too. I should have stayed at war with him but there were so many barbs I had to go back to defend my capital. I had to check to see if it was set to raging barbs there were so many.

Edit. Oh, and I founded Umgungundloun in a very dangerous spot but I couldn't resist all those luxes.

Ruins: Spear upgrade, Animal Husandry, Pop, Map, Barbs, Calendar, Pop, Map, Sailing, Barbs

Greetings, I have played the Zulu map to 103.

    Spoiler :

I wanted to go my usual Mining + Worker opener for a Salt start, to make early lux sales for gold in peace deals. But I got an early Pottery ruin, so switched to a Shrine that finished t10, and got Desert Folklore as the 3rd pantheon in the 30s. No AI worker steals presented themselves, but I stole 1 from Kuala Lumpur then had to make peace to keep it. I did get in a couple wars with Isabella for some modest gold gains and a Worker steal in the 70s. Tried to stay friendly with the other AIs, especially Greece & Huns, through trades, Caravans, and eventually 1 bribe to get them in a war. They were already taking cities from Rome and Siam and I feared them making a joint DOW against me. Made friends with Siam to siphon his gold, and later Ethiopia.

Policies & Strategy. I decided to go full Liberty and focus on religion & faith without taking Piety. Then the plan is to finish Commerce so I can buy faith Merchants in the late game, to aid either Dom or Diplo Victory. (Considering Diplo since I went Dom the last game.) Built Pyramids ~50 to set up the pillage/repair option for later, which will help offset my lack of Honor perks. Got Oracle ~85 and grabbed Liberty Engineer. Entered Medieval through Theology ~90, used the Engineer for Borobudur, and hard-built Hagia Sophia. While HS was in progress, I enhanced my religion (DF, Tithe, Religious Community, Feed the World, Defender of Faith), and spread it around with the free Missionaries. This round concludes with me finishing HS on 103. Its Prophet will be a Holy Site, and then I plan to generate no more, instead locking down my cities with Inquisitors and building a stockpile of Missionaries/Inquisitors to convert newly captured cities.

I founded 4 initial cities, and a late 5th because it could quickly chop a Shrine + Temple so I can build Grand Temple as my first National wonder. Then Libraries everywhere & National College. I have one CS ally, Antananarivo, for happiness.

    Ruins: Pottery, Spearman, Pop
BO: Shrine, (buy Scout), Worker, Settler, Monument, Pyramids
    Policy: Liberty 6, Commerce

Turn 94 of the Zulu game.

    Spoiler :
The plan was total DomV with Honor before I even opened the save. I like Honor with good melee UUs.

The start felt a bit slow despite the Salt, there were lots of barbs nearby so I had to build a couple of archers and an extra scout or two before expanding. Lots of ruins as well though - I got faith twice and managed to get an EM / Tithe / Pagodas religion. My faith per turn is very low, so I should've probably picked something else, but even one Pagoda is okay.

    20211116081455_1.jpg

2-city opener, going Construction -> Philosophy, sent a Caravan to Ram who double-forward-settled everyone. Tradition opener, then full Honor, left side first. Then I settled this cute little city and citadelled Athens:

    20211116081642_1.jpg

Alex fought back and I only took Athens on turn 71. In hindsight I needed a second melee unit there, and an extra worker would've helped as well. Alex had a road on the farmed hill that I citadelled, so I should've built a road adjacent to it for some extra mobility.

Meanwhile I make DoFs with Augustus and Haile. Everyone hates Ram who quickly gets top army (he had Pikes on turn 65 or so), so I bribe-and-DoW him and capture his two forward cities. I keep one and sell the other to Attila who quickly razes it. Attila's one of the best AIs to have in a game. He also forward-settled me, which made another good target city for my trade routes.

    20211116081101_1.jpg

Now it's turn 94, I'm getting close to Civil Service and on track to T110-115 Machinery. DoFs with Rome and Ethiopia end in about 25 turns, but I want to attack them sooner. I also need a second army as quickly as possible to deal with Spain and England. Perhaps I could eliminate Greece first and get Augustus and Haile to denounce me, then go kill them.

Edit: Regular DomV T158, total DomV T176

    Spoiler :
Delayed Civil Service a little bit to squeeze in a couple extra Spearmen to upgrade. Built CBs afterwards and ended up with two armies of 4-5 Impis and 6 CBs each. Hit Machinery on turn 112.

Eliminated Greece and kept Sparta which had SoZ, bribed Augustus to backstab Haile and got him to backstab-denounce me as well. Everyone hated that and Attila agreed to attack Rome for a horse and embassy. Kept all other AIs fighting too. Allied some crucial CSs including all mercantiles and the militaristic one with Camels. Of course later I'd forget to go Chivalry first and get a stupid Swordsman from them.

I stopped building units for a while and focused on faith, happiness and gold. Fully developed cities resumed building Impis, then switched Trebuchets once I got close to stealing Chemistry from Attila.

Cannons weren't necessary though and conquest has been very easy, Impis and Rangistics XBs are very good at killing things. Attila's been razing cities for me so I never had any happiness problems.
