I don't know if this has been brought up before, but it seems like an almost obvious addition to the game.

Why not have specialist slots in some of the happiness generating buildings. Happiness specialists (entertainers) would generate a certain amount of happiness and Great Entertainer points. Great Entertainers would be like other great people and be able to start a golden age, build a special improvement, or use a special ability. The special improvement could be a Resort that generates happiness when worked and the special ability could be to end disorder in an annexed city, like instantly building a court house.

It seems like this would give some more options for controlling happiness and make larger empires a bit more manageable.

Looks like you beat me to it. ;)

If we look at the big picture, it's obvious that there aren't enough options to compensate for unhappiness on the short term or maximize your happiness output. The whole mechanic is pretty undynamic.

I don't think that a new specialist type is needed though. I think that artists would fill this role very well and it would even make a lot of sense, considering that artist slots are provided by temples and theatres.

Also, I'd like to see the "create landmark" ability of great artists changed. Instead, great artists could be able to create "cultural treasures" which would function the same way as the Rock'n Roll or the Hollywood wonders in CiV4: They'd provide an additional luxury resource (hit singles, broadway musicals, Hollywood blockbusters, etc.) that increases happiness and can even be traded.

Welcome to the forums, Kalophonic. :wavey:

I do think that happiness should be given a lot of importance in the game, and that as such, there should be plenty of tools that can be used to influence it.

But Civ 5 has Great Artists, right (I don't have the game yet, but I assume this is the case)? Wouldn't a Great Entertainer be essentially a duplicate of this?

You compensate for unhappiness by stopping growth of population.... as a matter of fact the game does this for you.

Population causes unhappiness. This would be a failed mechanic if population could also increase happiness.

Well, obviously an entertainer/artist should only produce enough happiness to compensate for the unhappiness he himself causes. The only problem I see is when specialist bonuses from policies or wonders come into play. Then again, the number of artist/entertainer slots is limited by cultural buildings anyway.

Remember how this used to be the solution in the older civ games? Revolt? Make one guy an entertainer and the problem is solved.

The effect is about the same though, but there is a way to abuse it.

Old system: unhappiness without enough happiness buildings meant you had to move farmers to entertaining. This lowered your food and production.
New System: unhappiness lowers food and if it's too much, it also lowers production.

A way to abuse (perhaps it would just make the game more interesting) is the freedom tree. Specialists for 1 food would mean entertainers wouldn't hurt your farming much and this would make keeping your empire happy under a freedom civic very easy.

I think the original post is a great idea. It gives you additional choice, how to deal with happiness. The whole CivV game distinguishes between culture and happiness, so why throw them together to the same specialist? An entertainer as an own specialist feels natural. As the special ability of a great entertainer I like the idea of Frosty that they can make a hit single or similar. Then it is not limited to annexed cities.
